Just that. I’m holding out against Amazon!

Or www.hive.co.uk/

luckylavender · 21/03/2021 17:38

Retail doesn't open until April 12th I thought.

GoWalkabout · 21/03/2021 17:51

Blackwells or Hive

bellagogosdead · 21/03/2021 17:53

12th of April is the date suggested for non essential retail in England. Big supermarkets usually have some books though.

Is your local library completely closed? Ours is open for requests and click and collect, which is better than nothing.

whataboutbob · 21/03/2021 17:59

Thanks everyone. It looks like the 12th of April although it’s not clearly stated anywhere ( that I can find).
I’ll try my library and if not, ukbookshop.org- thanks for suggesting! It’s actually for DS14 and part of my ongoing efforts to get him to put his phone down and do something else!

WonkyCactus · 21/03/2021 18:01

Where are you OP? I'm in Scotland and some are open now for click and collect orders.

whataboutbob · 21/03/2021 18:35

I’m in London @WonkyCactus. I cycle past our local Waterstones a few times a week and it’s always been closed.

Can’t wait to walk round Waterstones. Can normally only afford a few from there but could walk around there looking at all the different sections for hours

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 21/03/2021 19:32

Also can’t wait to have a nose around all the charity shops as well. Not that I need anymore books to be honest. But. Hey.

whataboutbob · 21/03/2021 19:37

Aaah yes browsing bookshops and charity shops. Definitely one of my life’s pleasures.

www.abebooks.co.uk

Excellent second hand books.

whataboutbob · 21/03/2021 19:45

Thanks Mad. That’s a great resource. They have the book I’m after, so if I can’t get it from the library I’ll buy if off abebooks.

SpringerJS · 21/03/2021 19:46

World of Books also good - www.worldofbooks.com/en-gb

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 21/03/2021 19:47

If I can’t get it to read I will get it as an audiobook. Love those as well.

piglet81 · 21/03/2021 19:47

Abebooks is owned by Amazon... (you mentioned you were avoiding them!). Try uk.bookshop.org?

whataboutbob · 21/03/2021 19:50

Aaargh re Abebooks. Just ordered a book on there! At least I know now .

AwkwardSquad · 21/03/2021 19:55

Loads of independent bookshops have websites now, much better to go direct to them than via bookshops.org as they will make more from 5he sale if you go direct. And of course Waterstones has a website too.

Try here for your local indie: www.indiebookshops.com/indie-bookshops-uk-and-ireland/

whataboutbob · 21/03/2021 20:03

Thanks awkwardsquad that’s a good point. Although it’s the experience of going into a bookshop I’m looking forward to.

OP posts:
AwkwardSquad · 21/03/2021 20:12

Oh yes, me too! Twitter is good for bookish chats and recommendations, to get at least some of the bookshop experience. You could try Kennilworth, Forum Books, West End Books, Snug Bookshop to start off with.

AwkwardSquad · 21/03/2021 20:13

Rabbit Hole Brigg too

MadMadMadamMim · 21/03/2021 20:14

Crikey! Sorry, folks. I had no idea they were owned by Amazon.

whataboutbob · 21/03/2021 20:23

Thanks @AwkwardSquad, I’m a Twitter virgin but I’ve been thinking I need to sign up...

OP posts:
AwkwardSquad · 22/03/2021 07:37

Try this one? It’s quite new, a specialist children’s bookshop, including young adult. It looks like you could call for a chat and personalised recommendations (I’ve passed it and looked in window but not been in - it looks lovely!)

Says it on the Covid roadmap OP Step 2, which will be no earlier than 12 April, will see the opening of non-essential retail
