Hi, I'm in Ireland where the libraries have been closed all year and there is no sign of them opening any time soon. I want to buy a few long books to keep me going. I like family saga type books like Brick Lane, The Poisonwood Bible, Cutting for Stone, A Suitable Boy, Half of a Yellow Sun. If anybody has a suggestion I'd really appreciate it.

Game Of Thrones would keep you going till 2025 Grin

magicstar1 · 15/03/2021 20:47

The Clifton Chronicles by Jeffrey Archer. There’s 7 books in total and they’re brilliant.

AmandaHoldensLips · 15/03/2021 20:47

The Secret Children by Alison McQueen or Under The Jewelled Sky by the same author. (Under The Jewelled Sky is majorly epic!)

nocoolnamesleft · 15/03/2021 20:48

Yeah, bit in 2025 he still probably won't have released the next book.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/03/2021 20:48

The Regeneration Trilogy by Pat Barker

Passmethefrazzles · 15/03/2021 20:53

Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy
The film was shite but the book an epic saga and his prose was beautiful.

CharlieSays13 · 15/03/2021 20:53

Jean M Auel, Clan of the Cave Bear series. I think there's 6 of them.

I second this. Also Beach Music by Pat Conroy. Beautiful engaging books.

Try the Morland Dynasty series by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles. Starts in the 1400s and follows the fortunes of one family goes up to the 1930s. 35 books in the series!

Theworldisfullofgs · 15/03/2021 20:56

The Cazulet Chronicles - Elizabeth Jane Howard.
Cover pre ww2, ww2 and after.

Great except the last book You can get as a set.

Chewbecca · 15/03/2021 20:57

Green Dolphin County by Elizabeth Gouge.

A really lovely, long novel. Takes ages to read, almost like multiple books in one, you get really involved in the people, locations and relationships.

MumUndone · 15/03/2021 20:57

Oh I love The Bone Clocks, just brilliant.

FrankSpencersBeret · 15/03/2021 20:57

On this note

The Childrens Book by AS Byatt is definitely an epic.

Chewbecca · 15/03/2021 20:58

Clifton Chronicles reminds me of Catherine Cookson books - churning them out.
I much prefer Kane and Abel which is another sizeable epic!

WillowSummerSloth · 15/03/2021 20:59

My brilliant friend quartet by Elena Ferrente. Best thing I ever read.

HollowTalk · 15/03/2021 21:02

Jane Smiley: A Thousand Acres is wonderful. Also as a PP recommended, Wild Swans by Jung Chang - it's an autobiographical novel set in China - her grandmother was a concubine, her mother was in the Red Army and Jung Chang was one of the first Chinese women to be educated in the West. It's absolutely fascinating.

The world according to garp by John Irving and Whit by Iain Banks. Both incredible novels

Jane Smiley's 'some luck', trilogy is excellent

SquitMcJit · 15/03/2021 21:10

I second the Cazalets chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard.
