Books with Characters that have a stroke?

Looking for some help from this lovely corner of MN...

Can anyone think of any books where a character suffers a stroke or CVA?

It's for a project I'm working on about how stroke treatment has changed over the years...

Thanks.

It might not be a very good example or provide you with much material but... Treasure Island was the first book that sprung to mind.

"The Sun in her Eyes", by Paige Toon. The main character's dad has a stroke at the beginning of the book, and she moves back to Australia to help her step mum care for him whilst he recovers.

The only book I can think of is The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby.

Thanks everyone, I'd forgotten about the diving bell one!

Wonder if there's any more?

In Joan Jonkers' "Eileen" trilogy, one of the characters (in her 60s so considered elderly) has a stroke in the 1940s. The first book is called "As One Door Opens"
Her rehab and recovery is in the book, and she is in both the other volumes too, in passing.

"Door Closes" not opens Grin

Are you looking for unpublished unwritten personal recollections too?

emsmum79 · 04/03/2021 22:42

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Unpublished is fine, unwritten perhaps harder to read 😉 if you have an experience, feel free to dm me!

Robert McCrum's recovery memoir.

Eric Hodgins (1899–1971) wrote a book about his stroke and recovery - Episode: Report On the Accident Inside My Skull, published in 1964

The Old Devils by Kingsley Amis
Ending Up by Kingsley Amis
Nethergate by Norah Lofts

I've just finished As Meat Loves Salt (Maria McCann) - set in 1600s. A secondary character is treated for a stroke, nearish to the end of the book. It's obviously not a contemporary account, and it's not the main thread of the book.

Mum & Dad by Joanna Trollope. Although the mother and father are in Spain. The father has a stroke and the adult children come out to see him etc. I would not recommend this book though. It has a lack of proper ending.
