Birth And Beyond by Yehudi Gordon

www.amazon.co.uk/Birth-Beyond-Definitive-Pregnancy-Family/dp/0091856949/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/203-0831978- 8172719?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194199167&sr=8-1

have bought this for a couple of people and its the only baby book dh actually read. lots of lovely pictures, quite sane advice.

Congratulations on your imminent stepgrannyhood!

I bought Pregnancy for Dummies - It's really straightforward and funny. Has a section for Dads and parts afterwards for when the baby is born.

I bought "My Best Friend's Guide to Pregnancy" when I was expecting dd. It is brilliant. Very, very funny, but also practical and informative. The author is American but I can't remember her name. She has four children.

Can thoroughly recommend it.

Baby Bliss: Your One-Stop Guide for the First Three Months and Beyond

Baby Bliss: Your One-Stop Guide for the First Three Months and Beyond by Harvey Karp

These books were a life saver and made our little girl a very happy baby. Very sensible and great advice. Written with a sence of humour also.

I used (all good!):

  • Pregnancy for Dummies
-Birth and Beyond -the Harvey KArp one (can't remember name) -The Baby Whisperer

all a lifesaver really!

naturopath · 04/11/2007 22:15

and congratulations!

Baby Love, by Robin Barker is just wonderful. Its babycare (not pregnancy) though. It is a really gentle, sensible book - she explains all the options, and the pros and cons of all the options, without being judgey. She basicaly has a "here are all the safe options, now choose what suits you and your family" approach.

'Up the Duff' By Kaz Cooke is a hilarious and very informative pregnancy book - my favourite.

Both are Australian, although I think I've seen Up the Duff sold here.

I'm sure you can get Baby Love on Amazon - I really can't recommend it enough. I lend it to all my friends and everyone finds it so useful.

Astrophe · 04/11/2007 22:27

meant to say that Baby Love is a Baby care guide - practical things like rashes babies can get, when teeth appear, what to do about nappy rash, getting started with breast and bottle beeding feeding etc, as well as crying and sleep.

It is quite different from most books in that Robin Barker doesn't have a certain philosophy she is pushing - eg, she doesn't say you should leave baby to cry, and she doesn't say you must not, she outlines the safe options and leaves Mums to decide for themselves whats best for their baby...SO refreshing!!!

  • Birth and beyond is by far the most comprehensive. There is no match really. Lots of emotional counselling/alternative therapy/ilness AZ for mummy and baby/well being & simple folk wisdom that you won't find in other books.
  • What to expect when you are expecting is the easiest read and yet very comprehensive and reassuring. Very american, very can-do attitude.

-Best friends guide to pregnancy is the most entertaining. Really good laugh.

congratulations!!

I second the what to expect when you are expecting, I used that as my pregnancy Bible while I was pregnant with DD. It answered all my questions and more. I have now lent it to a friend but am quite sure that it had a section on multiple births.

Walnutshell · 22/11/2007 17:23

Penelope Leach "Your Baby & Child" is a must (agree Pruners)

coby · 22/11/2007 17:30

What to expect - the first year is excellent too. It is a follow on from 'what to expect when you are expecting. It's excellent for first time parents. I'd by both as a pressie for anyone who was expecting.

The follow up from those 'what to expect - the toddler years' is OK but there are better options such as 'toddler taming' IMO.
Might not need that one just yet though

SquiffyonSnowballs · 23/11/2007 09:43

'Birth and beyond' to just lose yourself in.
'What to expect' because it does have some good info (so long as you ignore all the patronising stuff)
'Best friends guide' to make you laugh about everything
'Misconceptions' by Naomi Wolf when you get the wobbles and think you're the first person to get upset by everything

SquiffyonSnowballs · 23/11/2007 09:44

Oh, and birth & beyond is by far the best to give as a gift - beautiful pictures and just heartwarming.
