Please, help me wise mumsnetters. Recommend a comfort book. I’m in a bad place and feel only a book can help. I’ll add I’m in early 50.

I know they're old, but have you read The Number One Ladies' Detective Agency books by Alexander McCall Smith? They are gentle and not much happens but I couldn't put them down. I read them when I wasn't in a good place. I loved them.

Hope you feel better

Hippychickster, yes, read and loved them! Thank you for reminding me those🙂

PG Wodehouse is my comfort read. Or Nancy Mitford. Or Stella Gibbons 'Cold Comfort Farm'. Or (maybe bizarrely) Angela Carter, Nights at the Cirus or Wise Children are just fantastical enough to be comforting.

The Shellseekers by Rosamund Pilcher
I love this book too!

Georgette Heyer and Agatha Christie are my comfort blankets.
I listened to The Thursday Murder Club when it was released, I'd received very sad news and it gave me some distracted time in the day when I didn't cry. Really helpful.

Thank you ladies for the recommendations. I have already ordered a couple of books. I must admit I haven’t heard of Rosamund Pilcher before. But it’s always exciting to be surprised.

Seven Sisters - enjoying this series.

Jeffery Archer - probably not an obvious choice but I read them when I fancy a good read.

PhilODox · 21/02/2021 21:38

I revert to Bill Bryson or P. G. Wodehouse when I need a comfort read. Or The Moomins.

PleaseStopExplaining · 22/02/2021 14:22

Dorothy L Sayers Lord Peter books are great for comfort.

OhWhyNot · 22/02/2021 23:08

Bill Bryson books

Early Marion Keys (watermelon)

David Sedaris easy to follow (as just a collection of his take on situations) very very funny and touching (without being overly sentimental)

I was given a copy of A man called Ove a few months back. Initially I found it a bit disturbing but once I tuned into the Swedish humour in it I loved it and I loved Ove.

It's a really nice, though slightly sad, book that left me wanting more.
