Good afternoon Smile

Please can anyone recommend good mysteries/thrillers?

The problem is that I average a book a day. So I do read a lot.

I prefer not to read series in order, I would rather read the best of a series.

Also, I've read enough domestic violence (and I lived through it myself) and children going missing with chapters devoted to their parent's agonising.
Don't misunderstood, I'm absolutely sympathetic but I just think 'I can't stomach another wife locked in the house'. It feels like I have read the same story told time and again.

To give you an idea, off the top of my head, recently I enjoyed:

Truth Hurts
The Wives
The Boy Who Fell
Confessions On The 7.45
The Chestnut Man
Blood Orange
Degrees Of Guilt
Three Hours
Unfaithful
Your Neighbour's Wife
The Silent Patient
Imperfect Women
Their Last Breath
The Truth About The Harry Quebert Affair
The Other Passenger

Have you read Girl A? New debut novel. I finished it last week, it's fantastic. Similar themes but kept me reading.

PamelaCake · 19/02/2021 14:41

The last thing to burn by Will Dean is a must read

BookHook · 19/02/2021 14:42

I haven't! It's on my TBR list (on Kindle). I'll buy that now.

Do you have any more ideas?

Anything by Belinda Bauer, Sarah Hilary, Rosamund Lupton, Tara French

BookHook · 19/02/2021 14:44

I looked at The Last Thing To Burn but is it more Domestic Violence?

I've been wondering about more Rosamund Lupton because I enjoyed Three Hours so much.

@BookHook no not at all. Trust me, it's fantastic. It highlights human trafficking. One picked up it's impossible to put down

TheChip · 19/02/2021 15:04

Have you read David Paulides books on the missing 411?
His stories are fascinating.

Moondust001 · 19/02/2021 15:05

Anything by Donato Carrisi but (a) make sure that you read the Mila books in the right order and (b) leave the lights on and make sure the doors are locked before you start! Totally thrilling, un-put-downable.

OnceUponAThread · 19/02/2021 15:07

Definitely Tana French. All beautifully written, amazing stories. I prefer the Dublin murders to the standalones.

You said you prefer to read the best of the series but I think all of them are excellent and find people's favourite varies a lot so it's impossible to pick.

BookHook, like you, I adored Three Hours and couldn't put it down. So I just read The Sister and it was bloody hard work. I wouldn't recommend at all.

It sounds like we like and read similar books, so here's some I've really enjoyed:

I've just read The Glass House by Eve Chase which I really enjoyed, though it took a while for it to get going - definitely worth it though, so I've just bought another of hers.
Really enjoyed The Housewarming by S E Lynes and also The Perfect Father by Charlotte Duckworth.
I love Louise Candlish and thought The Swimming Pool and Our House were brilliant.
Also loved How to Disappear by Gillian McAllister
And Haven't They Grown by Sophie Hannah
Not the same genre, but some of my favourites of recent times have been Leave The World Behind by Rumaan Alam
The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombard
My Wild and Sleepness Nights by Clover Stroud

As I read on my Kindle app or iBooks, I lose track of which books I loved.

SirSamuelVimes · 19/02/2021 16:02

The Cormoran Strike books by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling) are brilliant.

BookHook · 19/02/2021 16:36

LeopardPrint I have already read some of them Smile
Some are already in my list and I'll add the rest.

Any book by Nick Louth is worth a read.

BookHook · 19/02/2021 16:40

Missing 411 sounds right up my street. I'm on my laptop at the moment and when I search Missing 411 it takes me straight to the Prime television programme. I'll take another look when I fire up my Kindle later.

well, just from your opening post, I have a nice list of new books to read Grin

@BookHook

I loved Sister. There is a huge twist at the end that really shocked me. It changes the entire book.
Kote · 20/02/2021 04:40

Have you tried Jane Harper? I read The Dry last year and really enjoyed it.

youareminebestfavourite · 20/02/2021 04:44

I've just finished The Lost Man by Jane Harper - excellent

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/02/2021 04:53

I really enjoyed The Dry too, the film has been released but I think just in Australia so far.

BookHook · 20/02/2021 18:05

Jane Parker isn't an author I have ever read. I'll take a look now...
