Any suggestions of series you’ve loved? I have really enjoyed:
Rendell’s Wexford; Leon’s Brunetti; Lloyd and Hill; P.D. James; Elly Griffiths; Ann Cleeves; Josephine Tey; Nicola Upson; Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency; Strike; Agatha Christie...
I’d love some ideas of what else I might like! Thanks in anticipation.

I don't read loads of crime so not much to compare it to, but I like all Ann Cleves series for their crimes, characters, and lovely settings. She has a new one with a male detective, set in north Devon.

Charley50 · 06/02/2021 19:18

Oh I saw you mentioned Ann Cleese's, didn't see that. Blush

MingeOnFire · 06/02/2021 19:27

I've read some of these and now got some new ones to look up. I also like Joy Ellis, especially the Nicki Galena series, Damien Boyd, Carol Wyer and Robert Brydenza.

Meduse · 06/02/2021 19:44

Louise Penny
Angela Marsons Kim Stone series

Annebronte · 06/02/2021 21:01

Another vote for Ann Cleeves, especially the Shetland series

I like Ragnar Jonasson (Dark Iceland and Hidden Iceland series)

Agree with most Val McDermid's and some Nicci French's. I also like Rebus and the Cara Huntley ones.

Going back a bit, Reginald Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe series are much more complex than the TV series was, and likewise Elizabeth George and Inspector Linley.

Just read Alex Smiths Paper Girls, really good with a touch of humour

dingoesatemybaby · 06/02/2021 21:28

Rachel Abbott - DCI Tom Douglas

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 07/02/2021 00:11

If you like the old school PI novels like Sara Paretsky, add Janet Dawson (who is often cheap on Kindle), Jan Burke and Nevada Barr to your list. I also like Eileen Dreyer’s medical mysteries - they’re dark, but often funny.

You could try Karin Slaughter and Tess Gerritson.

I think Reginald Hill is one of the UK’s best crime writers.

Also David Hewson, Peter Temple, John Connolly, Linwood Barclay, and if you like John Connolly’s dark weirdness (which I do), Michael Marshall Smith.

Denise Mina.

Frouby · 07/02/2021 20:14

Tana French, Dublin Murder Squad series. Thank me later. Its amazing and I like similar stuff to you. Surprised no one else has recommended it tbh!

Standrewsschool · 07/02/2021 21:25

@newtb

The books by LJ Ross set in Northumberland are good.
Yes, I agree.
Standrewsschool · 07/02/2021 21:27

If you want a cosy murder, slightly tongue-in-cheek, then the ‘Lady Hardcastle murders’ by T Kinsey are good.

Also, J Twinn8ng Tom Kirk books are good.

Cocolapew · 07/02/2021 21:34

Claire McGowan Paula Maguire series, there's only 6 but are gripping.
John Sandford Prey series.
Gregg Hurtwitz Orphan X series.

cinders15 · 07/02/2021 21:48

The Peter James Det superintendent Roy Grace series - all the titles have got "Dead" in the title
I read somewhere the first is coming to TV and is being filmed now with John Simm as the lead
Based in Brighton - the first one is Dead Simple

hidingmystatus · 07/02/2021 22:05

All previous, plus: Kerry Greenwood's Miss Phryne Fisher series; Alex Gray, JD Robb, Margery Allington, Edmund Crispin, Dorothy Sayers, Minette Walker, SR Garrae, Ben Aaronovitch (with magic), Ngaio Marsh, Charlaine Harris' Lily Bard (Shakespeare) series and Harper Connelly series; MC Beaton (Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin series); Georgette Heyer's murder mysteries; Janet Evanovich (moderately silly and slapstick); Kelly Armstrong's Nadia Stafford and Rockton series; Patricia Wentworth; Richard Castle (spin off from a TV series); Ruth Dudley Edwards.

Do you think I might read too many crime novels?

I enjoyed The Ashes of London, the first book in Andrew Taylor's Marwood & Lovett series, I've yet to read the subsequent books but my friends who have assure me they are just as good as the first.

If you look at an individual author's page on this site, you'll find useful links to similar/recommended authors at the bottom of the page. Very, very helpful site.

Particularly love Stuart MacBride's Logan McRae books.

Ellmau · 15/02/2021 00:40

Louise Penny is great.
