Denmark is a new lockdown obsession. I've never been but am learning the language and loving Sandi Toksvig's new podcast and the tv shows etc etc. So now would like to try some Danish fiction but don't know where to start. Any recommendations welcome!

I’ve just read New Passengers by Tine Høeg, about a newly qualified teacher who starts an affair on the first day of her new job with someone she meets on the train. It’s a very fast read! And apparently it won a prestigious Danish book prize and was adapted for the theatre.

Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Høeg was a big international hit a few years ago and even longer ago Karen Blixen's 'Out of Africa' (maybe not quite what you are looking for)!

I like the look of Not Before Sundown by Johanna Sinisalo but I've not read it yet. This list might be quite useful for ideas as well, I've seen The Fall of the King recommended in a few places.

Music and Silence is great.

Rose Tremain is not a Danish writer, but this novel is set in the Danish court in the seventeenth century. The story of a young English lute player who is employed there.

Oh wow thanks so much - I didn't think I'd get any replies! I read Miss Smilla's feeling for snow decades ago (mainly because the title is so beautiful), might still have my old copy. Big yes to Danish crime....and New Passengers sounds right up my street. So much to start looking at here.

It's difficult when you can't browse through books in shops. If you're ordering online you really need to know what you want. So this so helpful.

I have listened to both Sandi Toksvig's Almanac and her memoir, on audiobook, she reads, they are great. But that wasn't what you were asking... Here is a list of curated books to transport you to Denmark: www.tripfiction.com/find-a-book/?location=Denmark&btitle=&bauthor=&genre=Genre...

HAPPY READING!

Netflix has some Danish series. For language learning I would watch:
English with Danish subtitles
Danish with English subtitles
Danish with Danish subtitles
Danish without
if you watch without language you can get a feel for body language etc.
(Yes, i am slightly obsessed...)
Works great

oh and read the books alongside ....

You can download free Kindle samples from Amazon to see if you like something.

Not a Danish novel but The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell might interest you. The author moved to Denmark with her husband and each chapter is about a different aspect of Danish life. I found it interesting and entertaining (though the author can come across a bit entitled at times).

thisislovelyme · 25/01/2021 23:13

Oooooh a year of living Danishly appeals. My fantasy right there.

Oh I am trying to learn with Netflix and have discovered a fab bit of kit - a k8nd of Netflix add on (LLM?) and it pauses at every subtitle if you want and translates in Danish and English. It's taken me a week to watch ten minutes of Rita.

And thanks re Sandi Ts memoir - I didn't know she'd written one.

My Danish obsession can be fed.

Hej Hej

I couldn't get hold of a copy of New Passengers but have treated myself to A Year of Living Danishly and Unrest. Lovely.

Am trying to remember what I've read that is set in Denmark rather than Sweden or Norway.

Copenhagen Noir is an anthology of crime stories in English translation

The Boy in the Suitcase is the first of a series of 4 Danish crime novels featuring Nina Borg, written by two women, one of whom is Lene Kaaberbol
