Serving crazy with curry.....

BRB with a synopsis.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 25/10/2007 19:23

Synopsis
On the morning Devi decides to take her life, fate conspires against her. Fate in the form of her mother, Saroj, who uses her spare key to let herself into her youngest daughter's apartment when she thinks she's at work. But, having lost yet another job, and knowing she will never live up to the example her oldest sister has set her as a traditional Indian wife, Devi had decided to take the easy way out. But it seems she can add suicide to her list of failings. But whilst Saroj insists on telling the world that it was she who saved her daughter's life, Devi isn't sure what she's been saved for. Forced to move back in with her parents until she is strong enough to resume her life, she adopts a vow of silence. Instead, she begins to cook. Wild, crazy concoctions that are so delicious the family is drawn again and again to the table. As Devi's silence grows, so does her family's bewilderment at her behaviour. Tension builds and others begin to talk. And secrets are revealed that rock the family to its core...

Miss Garnet's Angel by Sally Vickers

MaryAnnSingletomb · 25/10/2007 19:24

set in Venice, am only half way through and have to finish by Monday - it's gentle and not very demanding

wheelybug · 25/10/2007 19:26

Bree - that sounds interesting - are you enjoying it ?

MaryAnn - I think I have that in my 'to be read' shelves (it used to be a pile but has sadly become shelves there are so many ).

Should probably add I am looking for something not too long and not too heavy as there's a couple of very new mothers...

This month we've got Jane Eyre but previously we've read The Kite Runner, Rebecca, Old Filth, My Sister's Keeper, Half of a Yellow Sun, The Mermaid's Singing and Saturday.

I would say Rebecca and My Sister's Keeper are probably what you're looking for, maybe Old Filth as well

Bree, that sounds really good, its going on my 'must read' list!

wheelybug · 25/10/2007 20:11

Thansk Rosmonster - Have read both Rebecca and My Sister's Keeper. Was thinking of a lesser known Daphne as have a set I am slowly working my way through.

So far my shortlist has

Miss Garnet's Angels,
Half of a yellow sun (on my to be read pile but fear it may be a bit much in the circumstances)
A lesser known Daphne DuM Saturday (Again on my to be reads but suspect most have read it by now)

Any more ?

What about Frenchman's Creek by DDM? That's quite short and easy and also one of my favourites!

Half of a Yellow Sun is very good but quite heartbreaking and Saturday, imho, is just dull!

wheelybug · 25/10/2007 20:19

I've read Frenchman's creek too Rosmonster (am a real Daphers fan) - agree its a goodie.

Have you read lots of Daphne DuM ? I have mainly read the well knowns so dar Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, Frenchman's Creek, The Kings General (actually this isn't in print anymore I think but one of my faves).. can't remember what else - am going to have to go and have alook.

rosmonster · 25/10/2007 20:23

big even!

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 25/10/2007 20:24

It was a good read. I did not want to finish it, but when I did I wanted it to be a few chapters longer.

Not sure this helps..

wheelybug · 26/10/2007 08:29

Thanks for suggestions - will take a good look at them all!

Currently "Two Caravans" by Marina Lewycka.

Previously, "Brick Lane" by Monica Ali and "Small Island" might fit the bill.
