Started 'We Begin at the End - Chris Whitaker' tonight. Really enjoying it so far, which I am glad about as my expectations are quite high with this one..
Anyone else started a new book today?

@NeedToKnow101

Oh dear. I have menopause brain.... that doesn’t bode well. 😟

Alltheprettyseahorses · 02/01/2021 09:32

I read Jilly Cooper's Between The Covers as my first book of 2021. It's a cracking collection of funny and thoughtful essays, I'd really recommend it. Fairly short, so easy to whizz through in a couple of hours. I've got Caitlin Moran's More Than A Woman and the new Terry Pratchett, The Time-Travelling Caveman, up next.

SJaneS49 · 02/01/2021 09:41

Final few pages of The Book of Dust volume 2 then will be moving on to Hamnet today.

novaparty12 · 02/01/2021 09:50

Just started where the crawdads sing. Think it will be good, Finished the silent patient yesterday. Was a little disappointed with it as was the same as all the other of the same genre, although I didn't see the twist coming.

Blackcountryexile · 02/01/2021 14:59

@wlv12
I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you find comfort in reading.

burnoutbabe · 02/01/2021 15:07

Just finished one by one by Ruth weir
Which was okay, sane as Thursday club minders which I fished last week, also okay.

Got hunger games prequel to read next.

RecipeStealingBitch · 02/01/2021 15:11

I’m a non-fiction reader mostly. I’m reading Scoff: A History of Food and Class in Britain by Pen Vogler on my Kindle, and A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn.

Chocolatecake29 · 02/01/2021 15:11

I'm just about to start the Hating Game by Sally Thorpe.

Frouby · 02/01/2021 15:23

I'm reading Fingersmith and it's absolutely amazing. Been on my to read list for ages but kept finding more exciting things to read and wish I had read it ages ago!

JacobReesMogadishu · 02/01/2021 15:25

I’ve just finished The Wych Elm by Tana French. Very good.

Ellmau · 02/01/2021 18:22

Necessity, by Jo Walton. Last of a fantasy trilogy with SF elements. Brilliant.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 02/01/2021 18:26

Factfulness by Hans Rosling. Am about two fifths of the way through. It's interesting but I'm not entirely convinced by parts of it (so far).

Divebar · 02/01/2021 18:54

@Frouby

OMG I love Fingersmith - her other novels are good but that’s definitely a favourite.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 02/01/2021 18:59

I’m reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon on my kindle. It’s satisfying and I’m enjoying it.

I’m also reading Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy. I’m reading a chapter a day over breakfast. I should finish around September!

The decision to pick two massive books to start is a bit flawed.

Monday I’m starting Frenchman’s Creek with book club.

Standrewsschool · 02/01/2021 20:20

Goldfinch - a lot of detail in the book

ImAllOut · 02/01/2021 20:22

@YakkityYakYakYak

I’ve also started a new book today - The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. I rushed to finish the last book so I could start fresh on 1st Jan Smile
That was my first book of the year, it only took two days and I loved it! Using this thread for inspiration for my next one off to Google.
GrouchyKiwi · 02/01/2021 20:27

I read my first book yesterday (it was a reread and the third of a series so it was just an easy start to the year). Fantastic series that I absolutely love, though: the Ollie Wit series by Donna Augustine. Fabulous stuff, if you like urban fantasy.

My first new read for the year is the first Cormoran Strike book by Robert Galbraith/JKR. I'm about halfway through and LOVING it. Her writing is so much better than in Harry Potter. It's excellent.

GrouchyKiwi · 02/01/2021 20:28

Ooh, yes, DH gave me The Midnight Library for Christmas so that's going to be my next read. I love Matt Haig.

plus3 · 02/01/2021 20:30

Piranesi - love it so far

BrimfulOfBaba · 02/01/2021 22:11

@plus3

Piranesi - love it so far
Impulsively bought this on Kindle while tipsy, excited to start it!
PersonaNonGarter · 02/01/2021 23:14

Piranesi - started and finished in 2021. If I read a better novel this year I will be amazed. Amazed, I tell thee. It is magnificent (and at points very funny).

Hamnet was the last book of 2020 for me. Meh.

Frouby · 03/01/2021 08:58

@Divebar I absolutely adore it! Got about 20% left, am going to try and finish it tonight then look at her other stuff, have read The Paying Guests and enjoyed it but didn't love it. Think am going to go with The Little Stranger next.

Divebar · 03/01/2021 09:31

@Frouby

I think my second choice was Tipping the Velvet (although you might want to read something else and come back). The war time ones had a completely different feel although I enjoyed them.

Lalalatte · 03/01/2021 13:55

Started Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carre. Good so far, if a little complicated!

iklboo · 03/01/2021 14:03

I've started & finished Near Life Experience by Dave Turner, halfway through Rivers Of London 5. I'm going to try to give more time to reading this year.
