any more touching, heart-wrenching stories like the Kite Runner?

Im asking all of you who really enjoyed reading the kite runner, and were left thinking about it for days...like I am. I really cried, and was so moved.

I also found it to be such a pleasant easy read by a very good story teller.

Anyone recommend any other books that have been highly praised for their ability to touch the reader, and also easy to read?

thankyou!

The new book by the same author, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is also very good. I think it's still only out in hardback but I got it for a good price on Amazon - read it in three days, it was un-put-downable.

I havent read anything that touched the Kite Runner. I cried too. Love a book that makes me cry!

The last one before that was The Amateur marriage by Anne Tyler about a couple who never should have got married but havent the heart to tell each other.

OOh, and whats the one set in India, The God of Small things. The Kite Runner reminded me of that.

I've just read "Winter In Madrid" which was brilliant; I didn't cry but if anything, I thought it was even better than "The Kite Runner". If anybody else has read it, I'd love your opinions on it.

Asides from the hijack - have you read "The Time Traveller's Wife" MrsMerton? Or many people like "The Remains Of The Day" although I must admit I hated it. Or "Tuesdays With Morrie" which isn't fiction but is very moving. Or Isobel Allende's "Paula" which is heart-rending.

Another Anne Tyler - Digging to America - about two families who adopt two Korean orphans. Obviously not as dramatic as the Kite Runner but a good read, well written and very touching.

Anything by that author is very good.

I find Amy Tan books very good as well, as they delve right inot the characters' lives.

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions, I am making a list here to take to the library...

I also liked Digging to America & The Time Travellers Wife (though many people seem divided on that one)

Recently read Half of a Yellow Sun which is a bit like the Kite Runner in that it is quite sad and heartrending, set during the Biafra-Nigeria war

Seconding "A Thousand Splendid Suns" which is a heartbreaker.

I also enjoyed "The Gift of Rain" by Tan Twan Eng. It's a more complex story than the Kite Runner which is quite a simple fable, so a tougher read and the story is very traumatic at times. So not such a "pleasant easy read" as you so rightly say. But ultimately one I thought about afterwards.

The year of magical thinking by Joan Didion. On bereavement. Not at all grim, luminous.

TotalChaos · 27/10/2007 22:02

"The Attack" by Yasmina Khadra. Would also recommend "Half of a Yellow Sun".

Zog · 27/10/2007 22:05

Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. Fantastic.

I am in the middle of "A thousand splendid sons" I cant put it down although it is heartbreaking. I know I am the third person who has mentioned this book but its such a good book. I havent read the Kite runner yet........

I haven't read it but this
had dp in tears yesterday. I have never, ever known him cry at a book before. Even "The Kite Runner" (which he loved) didn't move him to tears!

mustsleep · 29/10/2007 19:19

perfect match by jodi picoult

BitTiredNow · 29/10/2007 19:23

We need to talk about Kevin, by Lionel Shriver - finished it over a month ago and still think about it every day. Really didn't see the ending coming....

Sassib · 29/10/2007 19:34

Second Jodi Picoult, some are better than others. Also anything by Donna Tartt - secret history is fab
