50 Book Challenge 2021 Part One

southeastdweller · 01/01/2021 09:10

Welcome to the first thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2020, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

Who's in for this year?

@RavenclawsomeCrone I assumed that was likely. I know the ‘broken woman’ thriller genre is a bit overdone but they do seem to keep me reading.

highlandcoo · 01/01/2021 10:01

Thank you for the new thread southeast and Happy New Year to all 50 bookers, old and new.

Today I will get Joe Wicks and a short walk over with, then looking forward to catching up with OMF and starting Shuggie Bain as my first read of the year.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2021 10:03

Thanks, South.

Happy New Year and happy reading and God bless us, everyone!

Tanaqui · 01/01/2021 10:04

Thank you @southeastdweller, and happy new year everyone!

I am about 20% into Here I Am by Jonathan Safran Froer and finding it hard going at the moment!

Sonnet · 01/01/2021 10:10

I'm currently still in bed with coffee reading Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz- a perfect start to 2021.
Happy New Year all and here's to a great year of reading

MamaNewtNewt · 01/01/2021 10:11

Thanks for the thread @southeastdweller - I'm in, hoping to read around 70 books this year but not going to get too hung up on the numbers.

Welcome to all those joining for the first time and Happy New Year to everyone. May this year bring nothing but good reads and good times.

yellowmaoampinball · 01/01/2021 10:12

I'd like to join please! I think I read about 30 books last year so 50 may be ambitious but I'll give it a whirl. I'm currently on book 2 of The Fifth Season trilogy and thoroughly enjoying it. I'd like to use the library more when they reopen as I currently use my kindle for all my reading.

ButwhereisMYcoffee · 01/01/2021 10:16

Me please! Currently reading a random but fascinating history book called The Victorian Governess by Kathryn Hughes which I bought off the back of loving her biography of Mrs Beeton.

WillYouStopNamingNutcrackers · 01/01/2021 10:24

Happy New Year! Harlan reporting for reading duty (I'm keeping my Christmas name until 4th Jan). Currently reading The Way of All Flesh by Ambrose Parry and Look Again by David Bailey.

A couple of my wishlist books dropped in price overnight - Jenni Murray's book about the psychology of weight/size, The Mist by Ragnar Jonasson, my favourite Icelandic crime writer, and Islands of Mercy by Rose Tremain.

Thank you southeast for the new thread, and lovely to see you all. Welcome especially to the newcomers!

FortunaMajor · 01/01/2021 10:25

Remus Grin put the Muppets back in the box until next xmas!

Turn I'm so glad you've said that about An American Marriage. Everyone I know raved about it and I couldn't see what the fuss was about. I thought it really lost its way and could have been a much better book.

GandT bon courage! It's a great book, but hard going in places.

Betts I'll be interested to see what you think of the Caitlin Moran. I started and abandoned it last week. I didn't have the patience at the time and had just done a run of Calman/Pascoe and wanted something different.

Palegreen best of luck with the new job.

BadlydoneHelen · 01/01/2021 10:25

I've lurked on these threads forever but in the spirit of new year resolutions am diving in today. Once I've gone and found out how to bold I'll tell you what I'm reading!

rockingaroundthemulberrybush · 01/01/2021 10:26

I'm new! I'm spending far too long on my phone just now and my brain feels poorly from it so I am going to join in!

I'm starting with Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stewart too. I really recommend Home Stretch by Graham Norton, which I read on Boxing Day for anyone wondering - it was a gift and I had low expectations, but I really enjoyed it!

KeithLeMonde · 01/01/2021 10:27

Happy New Year to you all! Thanks Southeast for the new thread and welcome to all the new joiners.

I've started the year badly with four 99p kindle deals from the New Year, New You section. One of them is the Wendy Wood book about changing your habits which someone (sorry, champagne has erased my memory of who it was) recommended on the 2020 thread last night - just mentioning it in case anyone else would like to join me in scupper ing their resolutions only a few hours into the new year Grin

StitchesInChristmasTime · 01/01/2021 10:31

Thanks southeast, and happy new year to everyone Smile

ShotgunShack · 01/01/2021 10:33

Yes please and thank you southeast!

Name changed from JollyYella

I dropped off last year due to real life intervening but exceeded 50 books which is a massive achievement for me. I loved spending my reading year with you all.

Am half way through The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper and enjoying it.

FortunaMajor · 01/01/2021 10:34

Keith!!!!!!!! Although the habits book did sound good.

If it helps I'm starting the year as I mean to go on. Sitting in my pants eating Pringles for breakfast.

Forgot to say welcome to all the new joiners before. If any lurkers aren't sure, jump in, we don't bite much.

2021booklover · 01/01/2021 10:38

Lurked all last year and have decided to join in this time. Managed 80 books in 2020 and hoping to equal it.
Re-reading Career of Evil in anticipation of reading the next two though have heard Lethal White isn’t so good.

bettbattenburg · 01/01/2021 10:38

Fortuna I am, predictably, reporting How to be a woman as a DNF. I don't need to spend 10 minutes of my life reading about how another woman masturbates and I don't really rate the opinion of a woman who says that planning for social events is dominated by the 'need' to remove body hair. If I have a social event a week later then my planning is make sure I've bought anything I need to take and turning up.

  1. How to be a woman, Caitlin Moran DNF, I don't need this book in my life.

Now reading #2 Born Lippy: How to do female by Jo Brand. 50 Bookers who know me will probably think this is a much better fit for me and I'd take that as a compliment Grin

ritzbiscuits · 01/01/2021 10:39

I'm joining in but will be aiming for 24 books as only managed 8 last year!

I hope you all don't mind me watching this thread as well as the 26 one, as you all have such great recommendations.

BadlydoneHelen · 01/01/2021 10:40

Right hope bold works:
In spite of a resolution to buy less books on kindle and read the ones I already have I found myself spending 99p on Midwinter Mysteries by Agatha Christie which is 'a winter themed collection' that I thought might be a gentle start to the year as I'm feeling rather fragile at the thought of going back to work (primarySad)

FranKatzenjammer · 01/01/2021 10:41

Signing in. Thanks southeast, welcome to the new people and Happy New Year to all!

Superstardjs · 01/01/2021 10:41

I'm in. Work was so busy last year I failed miserably. I am not buying any new books, have probably 100+ unread and intending to be brutal about passing on books I don't like.

BestIsWest · 01/01/2021 10:43

Thank you Southeast

Happy 2021 to everyone.

Kicking off with One By One - Ruth Ware
Staff from a tech start up get trapped in a luxury ski chalet when an avalanche hits. A murderer is among them. Decent enough thriller.

WithIcePlease · 01/01/2021 10:43

Joining this year please
Currently reading After the fall by Charity Norman

whataballbag · 01/01/2021 10:45

Can I join?

Going to go on a kindle spree today, any recommendations would be great!
