Having heard about it on here, I have gone through to Book 10 on Audible and it has been a real comfort during these last shitty months.

But what now?

Any suggestions?

The Ruth Galloway series by Ellie Griffiths?

highlandcoo · 31/12/2020 21:25

Have you read any Ann Cleeves OP?

The Vera series or Shetland - both are good.

Also Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache books set in French Canada.

I got a bit lost with SS around book 6 or 7. Was enjoying them less. Should go back and complete them though.

Ellapaella · 31/12/2020 21:37

I loved the audible Simon Serralier's. I've moved onto the Shetland Series and have also enjoyed a lot of the PD James Daglish series on audible.

Anselve · 31/12/2020 21:48

I second Ruth Galloway series - I went straight from Simon serrailler to her

citycitycity · 31/12/2020 21:58

I’m working my way through Ruth Galloway and Inspector Gamache. SS has just been added to my list.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 31/12/2020 22:03

@highlandcoo I was coming on to recommend exactly those too!

Also love the Kate Shugak books by Dana Stabenow - based in Alaska

pursuedbyablackdog · 31/12/2020 22:05

DCI Ryan mysteries (if you like Jonathon keeble as a narrator)

cortex10 · 31/12/2020 22:07

Martin Walker's books about Bruno Chef de Police set in the Dordogne

stoneysongs · 31/12/2020 22:15

Ruth Galloway series is great 👍
I am a bit lost trying to find a replacement at the moment.

hiredandsqueak · 31/12/2020 22:26

I've really enjoyed DI Kim Stone series by Angela Marsons on Audible and also enjoyed Logan Mcrae series by Stuart Macbride. Joseph O'Loughlin series and the spin off Cyrus Haven books by Michael Robotham were great as well.

Lovely news to wake up to on New Year's Day. Thank you everyone - I shall have a look at all your suggestions.

Perhaps I can cope with 2021 now after all Smile.

I've just downloaded the first one, had never even heard of it - I really need a new decent series so have my fingers crossed

Same here. I have been looking for new audible books. These ones will keep me going for a while. They look right up my street.

Loving it so far! Thanks guys

I found a couple of the SS books less satisfactory (sorry, I can't remember which ones) but enjoyed the next few more. Do go back to them as I think they got better.

I will investigate the Ruth Galloway series - thank you for the recommendation.

Blackcountryexile · 01/01/2021 17:35

Perhaps try
Frances Brody mysteries set in Yorkshire between the wars. Less complex than Simon Serailler series but easy to listen to.
Elizabeth Mundy. Heroine is a Hungarian cleaner living in London. Rula Lenska narrates.

If you like historical mysteries the Susanna Gregory series set around Cambridge university in the 14th century are funny and very long. There are 24 of them.

Fuggly · 05/01/2021 10:43

Try the Tony Mclean series by James Oswald. There are about 10.

I'm working my way through the Ruth Galloway series, just finished no. 6 and already have the others lined up.

Interesting about SS, I also stalled at about no. 6 so may go back to these if they improve.

Had a similar scenario with the Sophie Hannah series - can't remember the name of the detectives, it was a few years ago, Charlie something maybe? Anyway I loved the first few but felt they ran out of steam . Funnily enough though I have just started Sophie Hannah' latest stand- alone Haven't They Grown. Early days yet.

efeslight · 05/01/2021 20:37

Ann cleeves - Vera and Shetland series
Elly Griffiths- Ruth the archaeologist
Peter Robinson, early books are better
Ruth Rendell
P D james
Val Mcdermid, a little grittier than Susan Hill
Stephen Booth books set in Derbyshire
Tony Parsons detective series, Max Wolfe I think

Sundaypolodog · 05/01/2021 23:45

Mel Sherratt -set around Stoke on Trent

Chamomileteaplease · 07/01/2021 20:20

Thought I would come back and thank you all again for your ideas. I am sure there are others out there in the same boat.

I have listened to the first one of Ann Cleaves' Shetland series and the first one of Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway series and really enjoyed them both so will continue with both series.

I found Detective Perez quite passive but I still enjoyed the book, not sure what others think. And I have nearly finished the first Ruth Galloway one and absolutely love it - the narrator has such a soothing voice Grin. Happily addicted.

I will also bear the others in mind for the future.

I hope lots of other people have found this useful too. Thank you again Smile.

Glad you enjoyed Ruth Galloway

As far as Anne Cleeves is concerned, I prefer Vera over Perez though both are very good.

fluckityfluckfluck · 08/01/2021 06:40

I'm on book 3 of Simon Seraillier - it's so different! The death in book one and no 'finding' in book two.... totally different

StillDumDeDumming · 08/01/2021 10:23

I'm looking for something new. I usually go for prosaic or educational stuff on audible but lately in need of escape!

Just finished the latest Strike/ JK Rowling book (blimey that woman needs an editor!). I like good characters that are believable and an actual ending normally. Which of the pp recommendations should I go with?

fluckityfluckfluck · 08/01/2021 17:37

I had just finished the strike series before this so I'd say go with Simon seraillier

Ellapaella · 17/01/2021 09:17

So disappointed- I used a credit to download an Elly Griffiths audiobook and the narrators voice is just so off putting - I really don't want to carry on with it. Breathless and expressionless. It goes to show it's often all about how well someone reads the story!
