I used to devour books as a child, teen and twenty something. A mixture of very light easy reading books and deep wordy novels. Somewhere since having kids and the complete immersion of our lives into the internet I lost my passion but I am spending my evenings reading facebook, mumsnet and twitter and it is just the same stuff over and over so to be honest it's become a bad habit! My new years resolution is to start reading again and I would love some recommendations - ideally some serious page turners to really get me back into the swing of things. Any suggestions appreciated!

I'm reading 'I am pilgrim' at the moment. It's a page turner. I love Anne Tyler and Tracey Chevalier for good writing. The Outlander series are great too they have a bit of everything in them and are light reading.

I've struggled to pick up a book for a couple of years. Then I got a book called "The Nine Hundred" for Christmas and I can't put it down! Its about the first transport of Jewish women to Auschwitz, so not an easy read. But if its your kind of thing I would definitely recommend it. Its so well written. And if you can ignore the references to gender when it should say sex it's a real feminist book imo.

Other than that I go back to my old favourites when I'm in a slump.

hi op, hard to find enough impetus to get straight back into it but find a short easy to read book you're really interested in! then do a few pages when you have the time. for me that's a non-fiction (I know, not everyone's cup of tea) type book. But anything that you're super interested in and the less intimidating the better. even an old book you miss reading! and then small bits, a chapter or couple of pages. it's all about starting the habit again.

It's just about finding a book you LOVE to reignite your passion and make you fall in love again. It can be hard to resist MN and social media. I'm hoping to tackle that myself in 2021 but it's difficult all right. Turning my phone off and putting it in another room or a drawer is just about the only tactic that works for me.

The queen of bloody everything got me reading again. It was superb.

I just looked up TQOBE. It sounds great. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm the same and have tried to rediscover reading this year. I recently read Three Hours (Rosamund Lipton) & it was the first book for ages that I found gripping/unable to put down.

I also just finished Writers & Lovers (Lily King) which was also v readable & well written.

This year I got really immersed in
The Words in my Hand by Guinevere Glasfurd
Love After Love by Ingrid Persaud
The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes
The Sealwoman's Gift by Sally Magnusson.
OP Good luck with finding the right book to get you started.

@BuggerBognor

A quick question about Mr B’s. I’d like to buy it for someone but would I need to get them to fill out the questionnaire about their reading tastes first (they have specific interests).

romanziere · 03/01/2021 16:10

I recently powered through The Wych Elm by Tana French. Absolutely loved it and found it totally absorbing.

I also adored The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber.

I was in a similar rut and have bookshelves full of books. So I’ve decided to read them, in randomly selected order. I’m on my 5th since Christmas Day and loving my ‘choices’ so far.

@BuggerBognor

Thanks a lot - that's great! I've decided I'll gift it the person so. A book spa sounds like a delectable experience!

Titsywoo · 05/01/2021 22:16

NovemberR · 06/01/2021 02:34

I've just finished Richard Osman's first book - The Thursday Murder Club. It's cracking! I know it's been advertised all over but it's funny, light, quirky and got some real twists in it. Easy reading, but well worth it!

When I'm in a slump I pick up an old favourite to get me going again. Always tends to be an old Sharon Penman from my youth...Sunne in Splendour or Here Be Dragons Grin
