So, this is to share the books you are reading/ have read in a foreign language.
I read in French and German, but other languages welcome too.

Good morning, all! I'm going to start a new thread for our discussion on 'Les Grandes Nouvelles Français du Vingtième Siécle'.

I'm now about half way through

Bondree by Andree Michaud.

Bondrée is the story of two murders (so far) of young women at a holiday location (there are chalet type houses that families are staying at) in some woods on the border of Canada and the US. There is a lake called boundary lake, which becomes bondrée.
The story is told from the point of view of a girl who is a bit younger than the murdered women and had looked up to them, also from the point of view of the American police officer who investigates the murder.
It is really well written and you see how the girl's childhood ends overnight and how the murders the police officer has dealt with have affected him. It is interspersed with some English as the characters are both French and English speakers.

Finished now and I really enjoyed it. Interesting use of the odd English word here and there, to emphasise a particular point from the American police officer.

Thought I'd bump my own thread to recommend
Lehrerin einer neuen Zeit by Laura Baldini.

In German but about Maria Montessori. Fictional retelling of her studies and early career in Italy at the end of the 19th century. Really enjoyed it and read it in a few days.

I love Delphine de Vigan, especially Rien me s’oppose à la unit. No et moi v good too.

Wildernesstips · 02/05/2021 08:00

Taswama I’m going to give Bondree a go. I really fancy reading something in French. My previous French read was a terrible chick lit/Mills & Boon style thing because I thought it would be easier to read.

Taswama · 08/05/2021 22:19

Thanks for the recommendation @adeleh .
Let me know how you get on with Bondrée @Wildernesstips .

I am currently reading La Guerre des Pauvres by Eric Vuillard, the life of a preacher in the 16th century. I am also about to start Nino Haratischwili's Das Achte Leben - a huge 1000 page family saga. Its won a few awards in Germany.
I love Robertseethaler's books - Ein Ganzes Leben and Der Trafikant.
At the moment I am also listening to Edinburgh Book Festival's weekly interview with the Booker International shortlist authors. Tonight it's David Diop talking about his book At Night All Blood is Black and it sounds fantastic.

Michel Bussi writes really fab novels. They work in French snd in English translation. Have recommended him to english people with no French connection and they love them too.

Just finished Marthe et Mathilde as recommended by @Kate105 last year. I bought a copy for my mum as a birthday present and after she had read it, she passed it on to me.

Really thought provoking and interesting.

Just found this excellent thread. I've just finished - and loved - le Liseur du 6h47. Heartwarming, easy and a little bit different.

Ylvamoon · 26/08/2021 07:46

What a great thread. So seamlessly place marking for some inspiration!

Here is my recommendation for an German book : Manduchai by Tanja Kinkel.

HelloPudding · 22/09/2021 00:15

Bumping the thread on the off chance that someone knows when Troubled Blood is coming out in French. I'm (very) slowly making my way through the first one, 'L'Appel du Coucou', and thought if I make it to the end I'll have a go at Troubled Blood, but I can't seem to see it in translation anywhere.

languagelover96 · 23/09/2021 09:37

For my birthday, I got this book short stories in French. I've been reading it ever since. If anyone has any recommendations for stories in French etc I'm happy to look at them.

Maerchentante · 29/09/2021 19:10

Joining you :)

I read in German as well as in English. Just finished "Winterkartoffelknödel" and "Dampfnudelblues" by Rita Falk. They are the first two books in a series about Policeman Franz Eberhofer, who has been transferred from Munich to his (fictional) home village of Niederkaltenkirchen in Lower Bavaria as punishment after going a bit rogue in Munich.

Not much to do until four members of one family die within a short amount of time. Even though everyone else believes they all died in accidents, he still investigates.

It's a series of crime novels, but they are still pretty funny, courtesy of family and friends of Franz'.

Didn't know anything about the "hype" until I caught the last half of one of the TV adaptations. I hadn't laughed so hard in years. Bought the first two books in Germany a week ago and now wish I had bought more.

Where do you get your foreign language books from?

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 30/09/2021 19:03

I think it's easiest to get them on Kindle.
