I love reading but I have really struggled this year to find a book I can get into. I have only finished one book (David Sedaris, Calypso) this year which is unheard of for me.

Authors I like
Sebastian Faulks
Jonathan Coe (but couldn't finish his most recent one)
Graham Greene
Henning Mankell
Maggie O Farrell
Kate Atkinson

Is there any new fiction out there that I'm missing? Just looked at my kindle and started 5 books and not finished one of them! Argh!

Because you say Maggie O Farrell, I'm thinking maybe Sarah Moss? Most recently Ghost Wall, but personally I prefer Bodies of Light and Signs for Lost Children, and Night Waking.
And Esther Freud?

Just thought of him really because he's also a Sebastian Grin Sebastian Barry – Days Without End is astonishing.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 12/01/2021 19:27

If you like Henning Mankel have you tried Andrea Camilleri's Montalbano books?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 12/01/2021 21:56

I love all those authors OP

Yes to Sebastian Barry! Days Without End was fantastic. The sequel was good but not a patch on the initial story. Absolutely loved it.

I recently read American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins and thought it was brilliant.

Have you read any Wally Lamb? "I know This Much Is True" and "The Day I First Believed" are both excellent novels, couldn't put them down (read them years ago and still remember)

Have you read Maggie O'Farrell's latest novel, "Hamnet"? If not I'd definitely recommend that. It's unlike any of her other books but still just as good.

ASnowman · 12/01/2021 22:20

John Banville, Tracey Chavelier, Colum McCann 'Let the great world spin' and Anne Tyler. For writers like Henning Mankell try Jo Nesbo and Maj Sojwall.

StillWeRise · 12/01/2021 22:29

I've just finished Hamnet and it is really good

ilovetomatoes · 21/01/2021 23:12

Have you tried Nora Ephron? If you like David Sedaris I’m sure you’ll like her work

OhWhyNot · 21/01/2021 23:24

I absolutely love David Sedaris

You would probably like Carrie Fisher writes in a similarly honest way with much humour and sadness

ScarletPimpernel97 · 21/01/2021 23:31

Louis de Bernières

Sarah Moss is a good shout. I've only read Night Waking but thought it was great. I'm reading Hamnet at the moment.
Sarah Waters is excellent.

elkiedee · 28/01/2021 22:23

Do you think your unfinished books are because they are a total write off or are they not for you right now/when you started them?

Elly Griffiths for her various series characters and others - they are crime novels but plotting and amazing solutions aren't her strength (but that's never been what I read crime fiction for).

LooseMooseHoose · 28/01/2021 22:26

Have you read any Amor Towles? Particularly A Gentleman In Moscow? One of the best books I have ever read and fits quite well with the other authors on your list. Very very well written, funny and sad in places and just had me completely sucked in

AuntieDolly · 28/01/2021 22:34

I’m just finishing’The Dutch House’ by Anne Patchett and I’m loving it

Lalalatte · 29/01/2021 17:25

I like Patrick Gale's books , read most of them and they are all good.
Never heard of David Sedaris , perhaps I should give his books a go.

Annebronte · 02/02/2021 20:35

Where the Crawdads Sing - Delia Owen
The Heart’s Invisible Furies - John Boyne
William Boyd

Annebronte · 02/02/2021 20:35

Agree with Patrick Gale too.

SJaneS49 · 04/02/2021 21:26

I didn’t mind Mr Wilder & Me but agree not Jonathan Coe’s best!

Loved Hamnet but guess you already have it. Books I’ve read in the last 2 months I’ve liked are The Nickel Boys (Colson Whitehead), The Betrayals (Bridget Collins) and Piranesi (Susanna Clarke) & Silence of the Girls (Pat Barker).

Never heard of David Sedaris either so must look him up.

Thirtyrock39 · 04/02/2021 21:29

I just finished a great read called the glass hotel which I think you would like based on your authors

NomadNoMore · 04/02/2021 23:13

@SJaneS49 I find David Sedaris much funnier when he's reading aloud/talking. Some of his shows may be available on the Sounds app
