Classics of English Literature by John Sutherland

I wanted something a bit more challenging than my usual fare so downloaded a course on English Literature- it takes you through from Anglo Saxons to present day literature and is 48 hours long or so.

It’s utterly amazing. Filled in gaps for me for sure.

I’d really love to talk about it!

Anybody else?

I’m listening to this and have been for a while. I don’t actually like audiobooks so these work brilliantly. I’ve just started Byron.

I can heartily recommend the Russian Literature course. Was brilliant.

mollscroll · 12/12/2020 19:26

Ooh - thank you. Will get onto that.

PerdidathePostwoman · 12/12/2020 19:28

This sounds great - thanks for the tip!

Ah lovely, I’m a bit behind you, just started the Metaphysical poets.

They fit into an hour long dog walk perfectly... one chapter on the way and one on the way back.

He speaks at a good pace as well, it’s actually very relaxing stuff .

So glad to meet another fan!

Might give the Russian literature a go.

I did listen to another book which goes through the various genres and how they developed but it really wasn’t as engaging, plus she had a massively arch American accent which grated a bit.

I also listen when out for a walk. It’s perfect and I find him quite funny sometimes.

tobee · 12/12/2020 22:09

How do you find these courses on Audible? Or have I misunderstood?

Wolfiefan · 12/12/2020 22:10

I’ve only just found audiobooks so lurking with interest.

PerdidathePostwoman · 13/12/2020 06:42

@tobee just search for the title

PersonaNonGarter · 13/12/2020 06:50

OP, your post has inspired me! I am keen to do the course. I can only find this one (photo) but it is 24hrs not 48hrs. Is that the same one? So I need a vol.2 as well?

Classics of English Literature- amazing audible course!

Thank you @PerdidathePostwoman.

"“The great courses” literature" in All Categories

Brings up about 70 courses: check the reviews first - I know it depends on the professor.

You can’t also sort by duration.... this is how I also bagged the entire works of Jane Austen for one measly credit Grin

APOLOGIES ... 48 Chapters not hours !!!!

Yes that’s the right one.... ! @PersonaNonGarter

You are going to love it.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/12/2020 16:01

Is this in the 'Great Courses' series? - If so, there is also a pdf course book with lots of further reading suggestions.

I have lots of the science courses.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 13/12/2020 17:15

Yes. How do you access the PDF booklet? I can’t work it out.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/12/2020 18:54

@MercedesDeMonteChristo

When I read on my audible app - there's a pdf button on the top of the title and when I go to my library there is a download button next to the title on the right side.

What are they like? I’ve never really checked them out but love science... which ones do you recommend?

I'm a big fan of the Great Courses, though I buy the DVDs (when they're on sale).

Another long listen, that I'd recommend, is "The History of the United States". It's 84 half-hour lectures, and has three lecturers: one for the period up to the Civil War, one for the Civil War itself, and one for after the Civil War up until the millennium. The first lecturer, Allen Guelzo, is as much a storyteller as he is a historian and is quite fascinating to listen to.

For science courses, I'd recommend "The Physics of History", which does have a lot of science in it, but is mainly about how science is used to analyse ice cores, cave paintings, art forgeries, really from the Big Bang to Einstein. The lecturer is very listenable-to.

I started out with languages bc. this is my field of study and I could easily check out the credentials of the lecturers.
It's basically the audiotracks to courses offered by this company:
www.thegreatcourses.com/

I am currently listening to "Biology: The Science of Life", "The learning Brain" and "Plant Science: An Introduction to Botany" - (on different days).

hoteltango · 13/12/2020 21:31

Prokupatuscrakedatus - I've got the "Biology: The Science of Life" course, but on DVD because I need the pictures Wink. I'm interested in the "Plant Science" course, but I'll wait until it's a bit cheaper.

I use the UK site: www.thegreatcourses.co.uk which opened a few years back. Prior to that, I ordered from the US site and often there were complications because of customs duties.

TramaDollface - Another source could be your county library. Mine doesn't have a large number of non-fiction audiobooks which can be borrowed via internet download, but my most recent borrowing was "Midnight in Chernobyl", and my previous borrow was Bertrand Russell's "History of Western Philosophy", which I had to keep renewing as that's a very, very long listen.

I often look at the sites (liebäugeln is the word - meaning I would like, but I can't bc. budget Smile) but at the moment I make do with the audible tracks (€ 9,95 a lecture series and book)

StellaAndCrow · 13/12/2020 22:27

Please could someone share a link? This sounds great, and I've got some audible credits to use - I've never actually used Audible yet.
Thank you :)

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 14/12/2020 05:52

stella
Just go to audible and sarch for the great courses and then you can filter by science, literature etc.

OnlyTeaForMe · 15/12/2020 18:25

Oh THANK YOU for highlighting these! I'm a long time Audible user and I've had some of The Great Courses off our local library audiobook app, but these ones aren't available. I listen to them on the treadmill, doing housework and when out for a walk.

They look great - and a bargain for one credit!

OnlyTeaForMe · 15/12/2020 18:36

Looks like you can also listen to them here, although it's not such an accessible format: literariness.org/audiolectures/
