Hello Mumsnet Hive Mind,
please can you recommend me a really good read for someone who loves all things Tudor? It is a Secret Santa gift so nothing too weighty.
Thank you

Fact or fiction? I love the Phillippa Gregory books but know a lot of MNers hate them because they aren't historically accurate.

Butteredtoast55 · 10/12/2020 20:33

I think fiction. She's obsessed with the Tudors but is happy watching very anachronistic stuff as well as documentaries so I was thinking Philippa Gregory would fit the bill.

The Shardlake novels by CJ Sansom are really good. They're crime novels set in the reign of Henry VIII.

Butteredtoast55 · 10/12/2020 20:59

They DO look good - thank you.

Alison Weir also good - she’s got a series with each book focusing on a different wife of Henry VIII - the first four are out in paperback.

Second the Alison Weir books, they’re great

Assuming she has does the Hilary mantel series? Wolf hall, bring up the bodies and the mirror and the light - completely brilliant

If you think your friend might like non-fiction, The Private Lives of the Tudors by Tracy Borman is excellent. It's light but not frothy and has lots of fascinating facts.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 10/12/2020 22:19

The Sisters who would be Queen, by Leanda de Lisle, a biography of the Grey sisters.

Butteredtoast55 · 14/12/2020 18:20

Thankyou all for so many fantastic ideas!

Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir. About Lady Jane Grey. It’s brilliant. It’s like reading about the Titanic. You know what’s coming but cry like a baby anyway!

Shardlake gets my vote too. Ive read them multiple times.
