Writing An Inscription In A Book

MegsSmeg · 29/11/2020 22:40

I have been tasked with carrying on a tradition for a friend since her DM died. Every year they would exchange books and write a little note inside. I know which book to buy mt friend (classics), but i'm stuck on a) what to write inside (it feels like nothing will be good enough!) and b) what to write it on (there isn't necessarily a blank page inside). I thought there were labels called bookplates that you could stick in, but they don't seem to have enough space to write a message on. Any ideas???

Inscriptions are commonly written on the title page of a book, under the title and author name.

Why not write something like; Dear friend, I know how much you miss DM, but I’m sure she’d be happy to know that we’re carrying on the book tradition. Your name and the date.

If you’re not comfortable with sentiment, you could wrote a small comment about the book (I’ve always loved this edition/I can’t but think she should have married Harry/).

You could do a commentary. “2020 was the plague year, but at least we still have books.”

Or something very simple, “I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did”.

But do put their name, your name and the date. One of the joys of inscriptions for me, is the way they place my books in my personal history.

The most important thing to include is the date and occasion. I second the idea of a comment about the book.
