Hello...

Looking for recommendations for books that are like Doctor Foster series of The Spilt tv series...

Those sort of family dramas.

Trying to get back into reading now my daughter is a bit older and I have an hour or so to myself - fingers crossed. Want to curl up and get lost in something rather than watching Netflix.

Suggestions please book worms SmileGrin

Liane Moriarty books are family dramas. Big Little Lies was a hit tv series.

Standrewsschool · 23/11/2020 17:04

Maeve Binchley - good stories

Jilly Cooper - for something a bit more saucy

Jeffery Archer - good dramas

Seven sister series - Lucinda Riley - good stories about adopted sisters learning about their past

Eve Chase - Black Rabbit Hall.
Harriet Evans - The Wildflowers.
Michelle Paver - Wakenhyrst.

Joanna Trollope writes family dramas. Gentlish though, nicknamed AgaSagas.
Mary Wesley -The Camomile Lawn.

The Shell Seekers, Rosamund Pilcher.

TonTonMacoute · 10/12/2020 17:56

I really like Tim Pears's books, In A Land Of Plenty is a good family story, and there are several others which I can't remember the names of.

The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo

A bit older but fantastic The Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard

PeggyBundy · 20/12/2020 08:34

Also recommend the Cazalet Chronicles.

Some that I enjoyed recently:
The Goodbye Gift and the Affair, both by Amanda Brooke
Three Perfect Liars, Heidi Perks
The First Mistake, Sandie Jones
Things I Want my Daughters to Know, Elizabeth Noble
The Adults, Caroline Hulse
Our Life in a Day, Jamie Fewery (this deals with a couple who do not have children, but their families play a pretty big role and, although I don't usually like romance, this one was good)
My Lies, Your Lies, Susan Lewis

ComeDoonTheStairs · 18/06/2021 20:21

Oh, and also, Rowling's The Casual Vacancy, and William Nicholson's Sussex series, especially the first 3 books, starting with The Secret Intensity of Everyday Life.

Clickbait · 18/06/2021 20:22

I love Ann Patchett's family dramas - Commonwealth or The Dutch House.

Also Anne Tyler - my favourite is Back When We Were Grownups.

ComeDoonTheStairs · 18/06/2021 20:33

Apologies, I have one more: The House We Grew Up In by Lisa Jewell was also very enjoyable!

There's a trilogy by Penny Vincenzi. It follows the same family from the 1920s right up to modern day. It's called the spoils of time trilogy. It's absolutely brilliant. I've read it twice and it's been a while so might actually read it again.

Mabelene · 18/06/2021 21:35

Almonds and Raisins series by Maisie Mosco

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 18/06/2021 21:39

Totally agree about the Spoils of Time trilogy. Also the Clifton Chronicles by Jeffrey Archer - 7 book series that is a multi generational family saga series.

TipperarygirlinLondon · 01/07/2021 22:38

Anita Shreve and Maggie O'Farrell wrote good family stories. Some of Jodi Picoult's were pretty good too....looking strings from different perspective s

BessieWallisWarfield · 01/07/2021 22:49

A modern family / Helga Flatland

The fallout across an entire family after an elderly couple announce their divorce.

Author is sometimes described as 'the Norwegian Ann Tyler'.

Sheerheight · 02/07/2021 12:54

I second Ann Patchett , along with Commonwealth pp mentioned, I've recently read Run and it is really good.

Also Anne Tyler. A Spool of Blue Thread is v good.

A lot of Patrick Gales books are centred on family, Notes from an Exhibition, Rough Music, A Sweet Obscurity (the latter is probably my favourite, and I think overlooked).

And Cazalets, everyone on mn loves Cazalets.

FuzzyPuffling · 02/07/2021 18:34

The Poldark books by Winston Graham. Not at all like the TV series ( soooo much better and deeper) and an excellent read.

I also like the Cazalets!

Viviennemary · 03/07/2021 13:02

I second the Spoils of time trilogy by Penny Vincenzi. I agree it's totally brilliant.

EmmaStone · 06/07/2021 17:51

The Cazalets series
My Beautiful Friend and subsequent series
Life After Life and follow ups
Mary Wesley
I think Celeste Ng and Lianne Moriarty might also fit the bill.
I also love Olive Kitteridge.
