Looking for inspiration :)

So far the only one on my list is Qualityland by Marc Uwe Kling (probably for dd), which I'd say is best described as Hitchhikers for the social media age.

New Jamie Oliver might be one for my dad, shumway - does it look good?

A personal memoir of Foyles for DM who knew the family, though I'm not entirely sure how - some kind of work context rather than social.

Wildernesstips · 21/11/2020 18:42

A Brush With the Coast by Sasha Harding (an artist walking the South West Coast Path) for my Dad.

Standrewsschool · 21/11/2020 18:49

Heatwave - Kate Riodan, for sister

Neolara · 21/11/2020 18:52

I think the new Jamie Oliver book is one of his best.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/11/2020 19:31

My sister has asked for "a book I should have read but haven't"

Thoughts? She hasn't read any classic

Do I start simple with P & P

Darker with W Heights

Or go with a starter like Christmas Carol?

bettbattenburg · 21/11/2020 19:54

Eine - you know I am going to say TTOD don't you?

Also A thousand paper birds - Tor Udall

bettbattenburg · 21/11/2020 19:55

Jane Eyre for classics.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/11/2020 20:05

TTOD is not for a novice reader I would have said Grin

FeelinSpendy · 21/11/2020 20:27

On my list I’ve got The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Heard great things about it.

BestIsWest · 21/11/2020 21:32

I second Jane Eyre for the classic.
I have asked for Barack Obama and Nigella’s new book.
I will also be getting Giles Tremlett’s new book on the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War for someone.
DM loves Pam Ayres so she’ll be getting her new audiobook.

Sadik · 21/11/2020 22:10

A Brush With the Coast also sounds like something my dad would like Wildernesstips

Victoria Wood bio for DM
Rage (Bob Woodward) for DF
The Salt Path for an Aunt
Normal People and Conversations with friends for a cousin
10 minutes and 38 seconds for a friend

I love buying books (and recieving them!) - looking forward to seeing recommendations here

Taytocrisps · 22/11/2020 08:16

Everyone is getting books from me this year. Well, except for teen nephew who hates reading and will probably ask for an XBox Game.

Anyway, here goes:-

Dad is getting the new Supervet book

MIL is getting a Kristin Hannah book 'The Nightingale'

FIL is getting 'The Salt Path' by Raynor Winn and 'A year in Provence' by Peter Mayle.

Teen DD is getting 'Erin's Diary: An Official Derry Girls Book' by Lisa McGee

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/11/2020 08:42

I think I might get This Thing of Darkness for my dad.
Maybe Richard Osman for my mum.

Some sort of social commentary stuff for DP. There's one about the working class he's been banging on about for ages, and maybe something about politics. Maybe the John Cooper Clarke too.

Can anybody recommend a book on mental health for a young man who's not a big reader?

I would personally avoid Jane Eyre unless the recipient definitely likes stuff like that. Lots of it is really dull.

Ginfordinner · 22/11/2020 08:44

Speedy Bosh for DD

WellTidy · 22/11/2020 08:47

Barack Obama memoir and Claudia Winkleman book for me

A book about lockdown in pen and ink drawings for DH

New humans of New York book for a friend

Charlie macksey book of drawings and sentiments for another friend

BillBaileysPasoFace · 22/11/2020 08:47

Private eye annual for dh
Michelle Obama for my mum
Fairytales for modern liberals for my best friend

Sadik · 22/11/2020 09:54

"Can anybody recommend a book on mental health for a young man who's not a big reader?"
Did you want a book to help with mental health, or one about the subject Remus ? If the former, I'd really very much recommend The Antidote by Oliver Burkeman - it's written in an easy journalistic style, but actually has a lot of very helpful advice.

For a book about mental health, I'd suggest The Heartland by Nathan Filer (which I think has been republished as This Book Will Change your Mind ). Again it's very easy to read, but incredibly thought provoking.

I'm thinking to get Wide Sargasso Sea for DD (who is doing A level English lit as a lockdown distraction & finding Jane Eyre annoying), but could do with another - lighthearted - option for her.

Something like the Becky Chambers Angry Planet books or the Murderbot series would be good (new Chambers not out for Christmas sadly).
