Book to get me into audiobooks

I've never really liked audiobooks, they work for me if I am driving or on the train but I can't seem to concentrate on them if I am doing stuff round the house as I guess there are too many distractions. I also can't just sit there listening while doing nothing else either. I don't drive far now and rarely get a train!

I have an audible trial, I got wolf Hall as had wanted to read it for ages and like historical fiction of that era, but knew it was a tough read, audible didn't make it any easier and I have given up with it out of boredom, so that's one credit wasted

I have 6 months trial and need some ideas of audiobooks that will keep me engaged while cleaning or getting ready for work etc

I have recently read some books by Harlan Coben which were really good. As well as historical fiction I tend to like mystery, things that really keep you gripped and no idea how it will end. I would like to get my teeth into a good series that maybe I can use my credits for.

Recommend the Elly Griffiths series about Ruth Galloway. Great mysteries and the characters come across well. I’ve listened to the whole series on audiobooks and loved them.

I second the Ruth Galloway series. I also love the Chronicles of st Mary's by Jodi Taylor. The Rivers of London series is good too. They all work brilliantly as audio books because the narrators are excellent.

Amortentia · 14/11/2020 06:13

If you don't like a book you can return it and get the credit back.

I'll support the Chronicles of St Mary's and the Rivers of London they are brilliant

My first audible book was The Stand by Stephen King it was very good

I sent Wolf Hall back and got my credit back

American Dirt was excellent on audible too.

Jacqueline Winspear - Maisie Dobbs series

My favorite recent audiobooks were the 3 novels by Elizabeth Acevedo read by the author. The Poet X, Clap When You Land, With the Fire on High. They are not mysteries, but beautifully written and read. The Poet X is spoken word.

Does it have to be a book? What about a comedy? I just purchase a complete series of I am sorry I haven't a clue which has been great for background listening.

A Gentleman in Moscow. Beautiful. If you don't like it, you don't like books.

I struggled to do listen to audio books while doing things around the house as I would tune the books out. What I found helped was to listen to a book I already knew really well so if i missed a few bits I knew what was happening. After the first book I had trained my ears to actually take in what I was listening to.

I really enjoyed listening to the Harry Potter series because Stephen Fry is a brilliant narrator. The Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths is also really well narrated. The Charles Paris series by Simon Brett is enjoyable as is M C Beatons Hamish McBeth series.

I find it really hard to listen to anything if the person reading it doesn’t do it well, no matter how brilliant the book.

brittanyfairies · 14/11/2020 13:00

Just remembered the Strike books read by Robert Glennister. Just brilliant much better than the TV series

I love audiobooks! My favourites are the gracekeepers by kirsty logan (i re-listen to this loads, absolute favourite bedtime story) & the night circus by erin morganstern. You can return the book & get your credit back if you hate it!
I hope you find something you enjoy

I love audio books. The BorrowBox app is a free app where you can borrow audio books and books for free. You just need a library card to log in to the account. I use the app on my phone to listen to audio books but think it also works on a tablet. You can borrow 6 audio and 6 ebooks at a time. It has the latest titles as well as older books but you may need to place reserves on the most popular books. Highly recommended.
I listened to the whole Harry Potter series which was brilliant.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, will listen to some previews of them.

Oh and unfortunately I can't take a book back and get the credit back as its a trial, but I realise you can do that normally.

My library unfortunately don't use borrowbox they use rbdigital which is rubbish

I don’t really get on with audiobooks that much either but I have used my credits to listen to some of the Great Courses series. I finished all of Russian Literature and now English Literature. 17 or so lectures.

I have Becoming by Michelle Obama waiting too as I am interested but not enough to read it myself if that makes sense.

I really enjoyed Adam Ritherford earring his A Brief History if Everyone Who Ever Lived.

AlCalavicci · 20/11/2020 16:22

I love all the Bill Bryson books but notes from a small island is the best imo.

Make a note of the narrator you like too, it can make a huge difference to the sound / feel of the book.
My favourite is Anthony ( Stewart) Head , I would listen to him reading a bus time table !

But there have been a few books I know I like But the narrator has spoilt it either by their accent or the way they pronounce certain words.
One had a main character called William but he kept saying Whilliam drove me nuts !
