Atmospheric ghost story

Any recommendations for an atmospheric ghost story? I don't really want blood thirsty or gory. Warnings of how eerie or scary it is would be good because I'm a massive wimp

I don't know what you've already read, but The Woman in Black by Susan Hill and Dark Matter by Michelle Paver are both really good.

Saucery · 02/11/2020 12:46

The Coffin Path by Catherine Clements. Any of Laura Purcell's books.

OohKittens · 02/11/2020 12:48

Naomis room completely terrified me.

Tuliptulip · 02/11/2020 12:51

M R James wrote the classic ghost (short) stories - Whistle and I’ll Come to You My Lad is one good one. I also love The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

1000umbrellas · 02/11/2020 12:58

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

Orangesandlemons82 · 02/11/2020 14:13

These all look great, thank you!

I came on here to ask the same question!

Op, dark matter is very good and very creepy. I loved it.
Naomi's room was also really good.

ShirleyPhallus · 02/11/2020 19:04

Dark matter is absolutely brilliant

Liquorishlucy · 02/11/2020 21:46

Ghost story by peter straub I think

LunaNorth · 07/11/2020 23:08

The Haunting of Hill House is the absolute best.

Fellside by MR Carey is also very spooky indeed.

The Loney is quite atmospheric, and a bit spooky.

garlictwist · 08/11/2020 06:52

The Yellow Wallpaper is a one of my favourite creepy stories.

Riverhousepuppy · 08/11/2020 08:41

Little Stranger by Sarah Waters is quite creepy
The Shining by Stephen King also slowly starts to envelop you as you read along

TeaMeBasil · 08/11/2020 10:32

Another vote for Dark Matter by Michelle Paver - one of the most atmospheric ghost stories I've ever read.

I also listened to it on audiobook months later and the was equally as good!

diplodocusinermine · 08/11/2020 10:42

Second 'The Turn of The Screw' - scared the bejesus out of me when I read it one dark night at home alone.

hollyandkit · 08/11/2020 13:02

Pet Sematary by Stephen King (ignore the crappy films). Really creepy and unsettling (but don't read if you have small kids Confused).

quebechouse · 08/11/2020 13:13

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins.

'In 1859, the story caused a sensation with its readers, hooking their attention with the ghostly first scene where the mysterious ‘Woman in White’ Anne Catherick comes across Walter Hartright. Chilling, suspenseful and tense in mood, the novel remains as emotive for its readers today as when it was first published.'

I loved it!

Alltheprettyseahorses · 09/11/2020 09:05

Second PPs about Dark Matter - it is a beautiful book. If you like that sense of the Sublime, I'd recommend The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood which is also superb.

KormaKormaChameleon · 09/11/2020 09:20

Yes Dark Matter
Also thought I'd throw in The Silent Companions

Orangesandlemons82 · 09/11/2020 09:51

These are all great suggestions, thank you. I have just downloaded Dark Matter. Will let you know how I get on.

Anything by Susan Hill. Good bit of spine-tingling and goose bumping material

Stitchyfingers · 02/12/2020 21:30

I second the Silent Companions.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/12/2020 00:15

Loved The Silent Companions, and the other Laura Purcell books. I’m not sure it is a ghost story per se, but also the Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.

Belo · 03/12/2020 08:45

Just a warning - Don't read Dark Matter if you're in the house on your own! I read it when DH had taken the kids up to visit his brother. I didn't have the best nights sleep that night....

Belo · 03/12/2020 08:46

The Haunting of Alma Fielding was reviewed on R4 recently and sounded really good. That's on my wish list.

nitgel · 03/12/2020 09:31

i've started to read This Dreaming Isle which is great
