My lovely friend's mum is very ill. I would like to send my friend a lovely book - either something uplifting and/or funny - or something beautiful - I don't want to upset her.

Would anyone be able to help me with any suggestions?

Thank you

Delight by JB Priestley
It's a series of short essays on life's simple pleasures, such as Cosy Planning, Answering Back, and Gin and Tonic. I think sometimes when under stress it can be hard to concentrate, so short essays can work well.

The Morville Hours by Katherine Swift is a lovely book.

How about a lovely copy of “The Secret Garden” by France Hodgson Burnett? It’s comforting in its familiarity of being a well known children’s book ,it doesn’t shy away from illness but has a strong theme of restoration through nature which might help your friend

Three Men in a Boat and Three Men on the Bummel - old, but very gentle and funny in an old-fashioned English way. Or, try The Little World of Don Camillo (and sequels) - a series of vignettes of post-war life in a small Italian town and the small dramas between the priest Don Camillo and the Communist mayor Peppone - again, gently humorous but comfortingly nice.
