Just wondering what the scifi & fantasy folks out there enjoy most?
For me, it's currently Jodi Taylor's Chronicles of St Mary and The Expanse by James S A Corey.

Love Chronicles of St Mary. Also anything by Lois McMaster Bujold (used to do more scifi, but recent stuff more fantasy).

Lalanbaba · 30/10/2020 00:22

Foundation by Asimov
The wheel of time by Robert Jordan

MsIreneWinters · 30/10/2020 18:41

I've recently read John Scalzi's Independency trilogy and really enjoyed it.

I also love Becky Chambers and the Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman.

Ecci · 30/10/2020 20:52

@MsIreneWinters I haven't read any John Scalzi since Old Man's War and it's follow ups. I'll have to try them. Just go ogling Becky Chambers, never heard of her.

The Dispossessed by Ursula le Guin.

banivani · 30/10/2020 20:58

@JeanBodel

The Dispossessed by Ursula le Guin.
Snap, or The Left Hand of Darkness. But I really love some of the short stories too.
BookishZen · 30/10/2020 21:58

Haven’t read too much fantasy but really enjoying Robin Hobbs the Elderling series.

lazylinguist · 30/10/2020 22:00

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. It's not just my favourite fantasy book, it's my favourite book full stop. And the sequel, A Wise Man's Fear. Unfortunately we've been waiting a very long time for him to publish the last in the trilogy!

dolphinpose · 30/10/2020 22:01

I love the classics - John Wyndham (Day of the Triffids, the Chrysalids, Midwich Cuckoos) Huxley's Brave New World, Orwell's 1984 and anyrthing by Ray Bradbury.

SisyphusDad · 30/10/2020 22:21

Julian May - The Saga of the Exiles. Absolutely brilliant.

Faircastle · 30/10/2020 22:35

I'm really enjoying the White Space series by Elizabeth Bear (only two books so far, but I'm hoping for more).

I've also loved the Wayfarers books by Becky Chambers (starts with The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet).

Chronicles of St Mary's are my perfect comfort books to read during difficult times.

Badgerling · 30/10/2020 22:59

Cast in series by Michelle Sagara
Another vote for PAtrick Rothfuss
Anything by Brandon Sanderson
N K Jensin
Sarah J Maas

Babysharkdoodoodood · 30/10/2020 23:06

@Lalanbaba

Foundation by Asimov The wheel of time by Robert Jordan
OMG yes. Wheel of Time! So looking forward to this on tv.
Giggorata · 30/10/2020 23:31

Yes, love St Mary's!

Anything by Philip K Dick
Iain M Banks' the Culture series.
The Ender series by Orson Scott Card
The People by Zenna Henderson
The Uplift books by David Brin
Dune series by Frank Herbert

And I'd put the Discworld books in.

TaxTheRatFarms · 30/10/2020 23:46

I’ve just started Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, and have just bought Consider Phlebas so glad to see them popping up in other people’s lists Smile

I loved Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky (#teamspider!) (and Dogs of War by the same author was also superb) then on the fantasy side, Ken Liu’s short story collections are amazing.

PhilSwagielka · 31/10/2020 00:24

Another WoT fan here, can’t wait for the series. The casting for Rand, Mat, Perrin, Egwene and Nynaeve is so spot on. I love Discworld, THHGTTG and the Red Dwarf books too.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 31/10/2020 10:57

Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett and Thomas the Rhymer by Ellen Kushner

Lalanbaba · 31/10/2020 11:35

Wait, what?
Also how could I forget Pratchett

Lalanbaba · 31/10/2020 11:36

Wait, what? Is for Robert jordan in TV. Is that happening!?

UnaOfStormhold · 31/10/2020 11:43

I have just been reading A Natural History of Dragons which I have enjoyed - imagine if Elizabeth Bennett gave up on Mr Darcy and decided to travel the world researching dragons to the scandal of all those around her!

Sadik · 31/10/2020 12:06

Current (rather than classic) stuff - YY to Adrian Tchaikovsky - Children of Time & Dogs of war, but I also really enjoyed Cage of Souls (think Heart of Darkness at the end of time).

Rather more marmite, but I'm loving the Ada Palmer Terra Ignota series, first one is Too Like the Lightning, currently waiting for book no. 4.

Did like the Becky Chambers books, particularly the second one A Closed and Common Orbit - again currently waiting for book no. 4 & a bit disappointed it won't be out for Christmas.

I could do with a new series though!

BiBabbles · 31/10/2020 13:06

Kelley Armstrong is probably my favourite fantasy author (she writes a good thriller too). The weekly chapters of Cursed Luck she did in the early months of lockdown helped me keep going, I'm really looking to the final product coming out.

Faircastle · 31/10/2020 15:07

I did try Adrian Tchaikovsky but was unable to overcome my atavistic aversion to the subject matter.

Do Zombie audible books count? I’ve read a lot of the ones mentioned, and live St Mary’s (there is a new Time Police series started - two books at the moment) but my recent favorite is The Mountain Man audible books, Keith C Blackmore, read by RC Bray (who has a perfect voice for this). Also Zombie Fallout by Mark Tufo ready by Sean Runnette.

KiposWonderbeasts · 31/10/2020 15:16

Just finished The Lies Of Locke Lamora today (Gentleman Bastards book1) and it was a rollicking take. Really fun, highly recommended.

Loved Katherine Arden’s trilogy, Naomi Novik, obviously the mighty Robin Hobb, Becky Chambers.
