What to read after Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy?

DD loved the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy and generally loves things like Dr Who on TV. Can anyone who likes sci fi suggest what to read next? (Adult/scary books fine - she devours books).

Thé Restaurant nt at the end of the Universe!

Cheerybigbottom · 13/10/2020 21:42

Stick with Douglas Adams, his Dirk Gently Holistic Detective books are so weird and funny Grin

MrsFogi · 13/10/2020 21:43

Sorry I should have said - she's read the trilogy of five! So now looking for sci fi by other authors.

The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde - weird and brilliant.

Rivers of London series (theres books and graphic novel)

MinesAPintOfTea · 13/10/2020 21:48

Good Omens

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 13/10/2020 21:49

Terry Pratchett

Start with the Tiffany Aching series if they like YA books

or with Science of the discworld if more into the SF

But if they like the humour of hitchhiker then Terry's books will take them into a whole new world

GingerPCatt · 13/10/2020 21:49

Any thing Terry pratchett and the skulduggery pleasant series.

Screamnastic · 13/10/2020 21:51

Ready Player One - DS loved it. Book #2 is out soon.

I loved Rivers of London, Good Omens and American Gods too.

I'm currently reading Mat Haig's books, loved Humans.

A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engel.

MrsFogi · 13/10/2020 22:02

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I knew there'd be some MNers who liked Sci Fi!

There are some Heinlein books that are more teenage than adult - The Star Beast, Have Spacesuit - Will Travel, Space Family Stone, and Podkayne of Mars spring to mind.

Starship Troopers, Between Planets and The Puppet Masters are maybe a bit more grown up - mid teens to later teens, I’d say.

To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. I loved that book - wish I could go back and read it again for the first time

MargotMoon · 13/10/2020 23:28

If we're talking Connie Willis then surely The Domesday Book!

Screamnastic · 14/10/2020 13:20

Is there an order for Connie Willis books? It looks like To Say Nothing Of The Dog is a series.

Murderbot series was recommended on MN, loved them all.

I also liked Long Way to a Small Angry Planet series.

If you have Kindle Unlimited Robert J Crane's Girl in the Box and Sanctuary series are really good.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 14/10/2020 13:39

Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan saga books are good and there are lots of them.

Murderbot got mentioned above, the rest of Martha Wells books are excellent too.

I also enjoy Elizabeth Moon’s space opera books. Lots of brave women performing daring deeds.

Darker territory is Michael Marshall Smith - he’s such a good writer.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 14/10/2020 13:44

The Ann McCaffrey Pern series is really good, it's an interesting mix of sci-fi and fantasy. I've heard good things about her other books too but not read them.

PhilODox · 14/10/2020 14:01

How old is she?
What about Revenger by Alastair Reynolds? That's the first of a three part series.
The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams is the start of a three part series too.
There's nothing quite like Douglas Adams!

Needhelp101 · 18/10/2020 00:16

Terry Pratchett!

The Day of the Triffids for something a little darker.
