If I liked the Historian, the Woman in black ......?

I really enjoyed the Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, incredibly atmospheric although it was admittedly too long by about 200 pages and a bit overwritten at times ! Also like some of Susan Hill's stories like the Small Hand (great story but the channel 5 remake of it was appalling), Man in the Picture and the Mist in the Mirror. Tried the Michelle Paver one set in the arctic on the basis of recommendations here, like a bit of m r james too.
Now the nights are drawing in I'm looking for something in a similar vein so kind of modern gothicky. Any recommendations ?

What about Daphne du Maurier? She pretty much invented woman-centred modern Gothic.

Gatelodge · 17/09/2020 13:03

Oh, and I'm not recommending it, because I thought it was hilariously bad, but as I also thought The Historian was hilariously bad, you might actually like it, and it's certainly Gothic enough -- Audrey Niffenegger's Her Fearful Symmetry. Death, tormented twins, Highgate cemetery.

I love creepy gothic books have you read The Silent Companions by Lucy Purcell very creepy and gothic, Dracula is amazing as well

Thanks everyone. Have read dracula and enjoyed it. Daphne du maurier sounds a good call, just listened to Rebecca on bbc sounds actually.
@Gatelodge just wondered why you thought the historian was hilariously
bad ? To be fair I tend to listen to audiobooks so maybe that detracts from the poor writing Grin...

It might, I can't listen to audio books at all. I just thought it was silly and schlocky, kind of like the Da Vinci Code with vampires and deeply unconvincing historians.

Try Daphne du Maurier's My Cousin Rachel?

Blibbler · 17/09/2020 13:54

Waking the moon by Elizabeth Hand and the Secret History by Donna Tartt. They're more ancient gods then vampires but I enjoyed the historian and liked both these books.

Everything by Laura Purcell is "modern gothic" Wink She has a new one coming out too (I think next year?)

Try also The Animals at Lockwood Manor and The Miniaturist (if you haven't already). Possibly The Essex Serpent?

Thanks for the reminder about Her Fearful Symmetry Gatelodge, I rather enjoyed it and haven't read it in ages!

Oh and I almost forgot Rawblood by Catriona Ward - very spooky and gothic.

Depending on your tastes, you might enjoy a book which comes out in October called The Devil and the Dark Water. Spooky, gothic mystery set on the high seas with a Sherlock/Watson duo, though it's fast-paced and twisty too.

Deanna Raybourn’s The Dead Travel Fast is good.

I think you might like "The Little Stranger" by Sarah Waters. And then if you like that you could try "Fingersmith". They've both got that"gothicky" feel, with lots of psychological mystery too.

Seconding The Devil and the Dark Water!

The Quick by Lauren Owen (I wish she'd write a second novel, I really enjoyed that one).

Stacey Halls The Familiars and The Foundling - they're separate books, but both slightly gothic.

I also loved the Historian though agree it was too long. Loved the language and style. Has anyone read any of Kostova’s other books?

hoochymamgu · 25/09/2020 16:38

Just read The coffin path by Katherine Clements. That was good. Love the suggestions here Grin
