Recommendations for Ian Rankin/Lindsay Davis reader

Afternoon
Thought I would try here. Do you have any recommendations for new paperback crime books please?
Needs to be:
Preferably out on paperback this year but not necessarily available at Tesco
Preferably a stand-alone or new character not #8 in a series
Preferably of geographical/historical interest or decent detective character, crime > spy/psychological

They are Ian Rankin, Lindsay Davis fans but have also read Stuart McBride, Jo Nesbo, Val McDermid, Lee Child et al so a first time character by one of them or a first time novelist would be great (if more of a police detection than psychological thriller)

Many thanks in advance if you know of anything that fits the bill WineFlowers

What about Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler series?

TheHoIeInTheDoughnut · 24/08/2020 17:24

It started 2004 so I cannot be sure they haven't read them. They don't read hardbacks or I might have been tempted to just go for Richard Osman. Because I am totally behind in which series of what they are up to or what they have got second-hand, I need to buy something it's unlikely they could have found in a charity shop or from a supermarket.
I know. I suck. I should know more than I know but I don't so figured a new title would be the way to go.

Thank you though x

Kate Atkinson Brodie novels - start with Case Histories?
Robert Galbraith - Strike series?
Donna Leon?
Carl Hiasen?

Palavah · 24/08/2020 17:27

Sorry, I misread what you meant by new.
Worth checking out Val McDermid on twitter - i think she's good at promoting new crime authors.

TheHoIeInTheDoughnut · 24/08/2020 17:30

Sorry - to be clear, it's not for me or I'd have no worries starting with Case Histories...but it has to be something they won't have already read, hence the need for a 2020 publication date. Sad They have read Donna Leon and Carl Hiasen for example, the names feel familiar, but I couldn't tell you which ones.

I enjoyed this by Val Mcdermid www.amazon.co.uk/Place-Execution-Val-McDermid/dp/0008373167/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=val+mcdermid&qid=1598286845&sprefix=val+m&sr=8-3

It's stand alone, set in Yorkshire at the time of the Moors Murders & good twist. Paperback came out in June by the looks of it.

It's the first one of hers Ive read.

TheHoIeInTheDoughnut · 24/08/2020 17:38

TheHoIeInTheDoughnut · 24/08/2020 17:43

Sorry sleepy that one came out originally in 1999. I bought it for them so recognised the plot and thought I'd best check. Brew Cake
Tony Hill series recommending for you though - enjoy.

How annoying! I hate when they reissue and Amazon makes them seem new.

Yes, I'm definitely going to read more of her.

elkiedee · 24/08/2020 17:49

A Place of Execution was first published in the 1990s though - this might be a new edition.

I think Denise Mina has a new book coming out but probably also one from last year coming out in paperback. She's written several series but I think her recent books are standalones.

Christopher Brookmyre in addition to contemporary crime novels in his own name, has written two historical crime novels with his wife, a doctor, under a pseudonym - the first is The Way of All Flesh, but it's probably 3 or 4 years old by now, so she might have got there already.

TheHoIeInTheDoughnut · 24/08/2020 17:49

I've learned the hard way when another relative was Confused that I had bought the same book twice! Blush

Ooh elkie I might buy Conviction for me actually. It had a recommendation by Rankin on the cover so I thought, yes, am in business...but is also a Reece Witherspoon recommendation/mentions podcasts, might put (male) relative off. But I am reading the sample as we speak. Back in a bit and thank you again to all of you trying to help. I hate gift buying, I always get it wrong.

Also Val Mc did a non-fiction bool about pathology - might they enjoy that?

TheHoIeInTheDoughnut · 24/08/2020 18:23

No, but again I might, so thanks anyway.

Zoe Sharp’s Dancing on the Grave.

Jane Harper’s The Lost Man.

Dervla McTiernan’s The Ruin and The Scholar are 2018 and 19.

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.

Heather Rose’s Bruny is out, but it might be hard to find.

The Guardian usually do a round-up of most anticipated/best crime novels of the year. Might be worth checking.

Smartypoppet · 27/08/2020 19:00

The Artemis File by Adam Loxley - it's a brilliant crime/spy thriller and a real page-turner. It is based in real UK locations (London, Tenterden, Burford, Winchester etc.) and includes a lot of historical interest. The main character also makes Jack Reacher look like Cinderella!

YogiMatte · 28/08/2020 12:34

Wych Elm by Tana French is really good, it is recent not sure if this year.

TonTonMacoute · 01/09/2020 14:48

These are not new but Ruth Downie's Ruso series are pretty good - crime set in Roman Britain, humorously written.

Medicus is the first one.

Have you read the Shardlake series by CJ Samson? I hadn't previously read any historical fiction, and really surprised myself by loving these. They're mysteries set around.a main lawyer character around the time of Henry VIII. I missed them so much when I finished them, looked for more similar and went on to start reading the Lindsey Davis Didio Falco series.
This is the first Shardlake book.

I would recommend an anthology by David Baldacci et all it gives you an introduction to many authors.
