Recommendations for contemporary period fiction

I've started reading The Doll Factory and have realised that I quite enjoy contemporary fiction set in 1700s/1800s. Over the last couple of years I have read The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock, Wakenhyrst, plus Sarah Perry and Stacey Halls' novels. Can anyone suggest similar books I might like? Thanks!

Philippa Gregory

I read a modern re writing of vanity fair. Becky sharp in the modern day. Different but good

Try Sarah Waters - Tipping the Velvet is her most well known book.

And I agree Philippa Gregory.

No it was called 'the rise and fall of Becky Sharpe'

The Observations by Jane Harris is a great read. Also Gillespie and I by the same author.

Francis Spufford, Golden Hill - brilliant.

I love historical fiction!
I’ve just pulled out The Fingersmith by Sarah Walters - it’s been at least 17 years since I read it and would now like to reread.
The Corset by Laura Purcell, The Nanny at Number 43 by Nicola Cassidy, The Unseeing by Anna Manzola.
I’m also giving the Crimson Petal and the White a second chance - just couldn’t get into it the first time around but it’s set in Victorian London

Sarah Waters - Fingersmith is excellent. Twisty and gripping.
The Little Stranger is also good.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. highlandcoo I'll definitely give The Observations a try. I read Gillespie and I last year and while it was a good read and well written, I found it quite disturbing!

I'm also a fan of historical fiction. Sarah Dunant is a favourite of mine and I also like Sarah Walters, Laura Purcell and Hilllary Mantell's Wolf Hall series.

I can't get on with Philippa Gregory - it's too much like chick lit for me, which I don't like, but great if you enjoy that style. Lots of my friends are fans of hers.

Slightly different but I absolutely love Madeline Miller's Song of Achilles and Circe, but they're based on Greek myth.

Hedda I like your style Grin

The corset is one of my favourite books!
