I've recently read and loved the Dark materials trilogy - ending with The Amber Spyglass.

Where do I go from here? I want to do it in order. A google said Lyra's Oxford was next - I bought it for my Kindle and read it all in less than half hour!! Is it a short story?!

Next is the book of dust part 1 & 2 - aimed at adults more than kids. Part 3 not yet out.

WelshMoth · 11/08/2020 22:54

Thanks!

Is Lyra's Oxford a short story?

Yes, its a short story. Just an addition to the story rather than a full on novel. There's another one too that follows Lee Scoresby, Once Upon a Time in the North, which is also a short story, and gives some of the background to how Lee met Iorek.

Picklypickles · 11/08/2020 22:59

Lyra's Oxford, Once Upon a Time in the North and then after those The Book of Dust Part 1: La Belle Sauvage and The Book of Dust Part 2: The Secret Commonwealth.

SkepticalCat · 11/08/2020 23:27

It's been quite a while since I read it, but yes, Lyra's Oxford is a short story. The printed copy I have has a beautiful fold-out map.

SkepticalCat · 11/08/2020 23:30

Here's a photo of the map.

As PPs have said the next actual novel is La Belle Sauvage. Be warned that - while I am enjoying them - the new trilogy are very very different to the originals.

BertieBotts · 11/08/2020 23:34

Lyra's Oxford is such a rip off on kindle! It's lovely in print though.

WelshMoth · 12/08/2020 06:52

I agree it's a rip off on Kindle.
What are the relevance of the postcard and other documents?

Be warned - many people have been disappointed by his new series, and by The Secret Commonwealth in particular. Two separate Booktubers I watch said they'd decided to pretend they didn't read it.

BertieBotts · 13/08/2020 10:55

I haven't read the secret commonwealth yet, I'm waiting for it to come down on kindle, which I think it should once the paperback is out.

I read la belle sauvage which I really enjoyed, although it has a completely bizarre part in the middle which didn't seem to fit into the story as a whole - perhaps TSC is more in this vein!

The short stories can generally be found online to read for free, which I tend to think of as (morally) a sort of digital version of using a library although this may be incorrect.

Tfoot75 · 14/08/2020 08:49

I thought the secret commonwealth was excellent - preferred it to la belle savage!

Jodri · 19/08/2020 17:36

I was not disappointed in la belle savage nor the secret commonwealth. I think Phillip Pullman is an excellent storyteller. Loved his dark materials and have reread it several times, enjoyed his sally Lockhart series too. I would agree that book of dust 1&2 are different to his dark materials but still have fantasy and magic a plenty. Don’t go in thinking it’s just a continuation of his dark materials and enjoy!

I started la belle savage thinking where on Earth is this going to go, what story is there to tell...I couldn’t put it down. I love it so much. I also greatly enjoyed the secret commonwealth. Looking forward to book 3.

23trains · 21/08/2020 16:40

I was really disappointed with la belle salvage - it was much more of a kids book than the original trilogy.

Star555 · 29/08/2020 23:47

There is a brand new Philip Pullman book, Serpentine, coming out soon! It's about Lyra: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serpentine_(book)

solidaritea · 29/08/2020 23:52

@23trains

I was really disappointed with la belle salvage - it was much more of a kids book than the original trilogy.
There were many parts that were unsuitable for children.

I think I see what you mean, but it is unwise to tell parents that it's a "kids book."

BertieBotts · 30/08/2020 09:03

YY, DS1 is reading the original trilogy and when I first read La Belle Sauvage I thought he could read it after me, but no, not really. He is only 11!

Jodri · 30/08/2020 09:44

I would go against the majority of posts here and reveal that I let my dc read anything they wanted to. We each decide and know what is best for our children though.
My friends and I read the likes of Hollywood wives, flowers in the attic, Stephen king and Richard laymon from the age of 12/13. I think if they can understand the words and meaning of text then they can deal with it but if they can’t it will go over their heads and pass them by in ignorant bliss.
Visual depictions like film, internet, graphic novels, performance art that’s a completely different ball game.
