Recommendations for a 15 year old boy?

He's the typical reluctant reader teenage boy, although he used to like reading. He loved the Harry Potter books a few years ago, and is re-reading them this summer as "I've got nothing else to read".

Apart from Harry Potter, he doesn't really like fantasy and prefers realistic books set in the modern day teenage world.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Hunger Games? Fantasy but feels real.

TuttiFrutti · 03/08/2020 11:20

Thanks Petronellas. I will try him on those.

Has he read the Alex Rider series? I know some kids read them from age 9 or so but I didn't read them until I was about 30 and I love them.
Cherub series is good too.

My son loved the Cherub series

It’s more scifi than fantasy, so perhaps Catherine Jink’s Evil Genius, about a boy who is being trained as an evil dictator, but rebels.

Johanna Baker’s Devastation Road is terrific - its contemporary teenagers solving a mystery.

He might also enjoy some of the adult thrillers. Matthew Reilly writes action-packed adventures, and he’s a difficult read. Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books might also appeal.

Is he ready for adult fiction? George Orwell and Aldous Huxley night float his boat - these were all handed on to me by my older DBros at this age. I red a lot of Aidan Chambers too.

Keren David's My Name Is Joe and its two sequels might suit him - thrillers. The hero is a bit younger than your DS.

Thank you everyone for all your recommendations! I love Mumsnet, I didn't think I would get so many! I will investigate all of these.

The Northern lights trilogy..... great read!

solidaritea · 04/08/2020 12:57

Kevin Brooks is a good author for realistic, if often depressing, fiction for teens.

solidaritea · 04/08/2020 12:59

And definitely the northern lights trilogy.

John Grisham for teens... Theodore Boone

CaptainNelson · 04/08/2020 21:38

Yes to Theodore Boone, though my DS12 read this a couple of years ago
Also Patrick Ness - the Chaos Walking trilogy is very gripping and lots of suitable themes.
Noughts and Crosses series if he hasn't read that

CaptainNelson · 04/08/2020 21:38

My son loved the Cherub series
Oh yes, this too
mamma2016 · 04/08/2020 21:42

Junk by Melvin Burgess.

Lydia777 · 04/08/2020 21:58

Maybe 'The Outsiders.' If he is reasonably advanced though, I would get him started on adult fiction. I also find that teenage boys often prefer non-fiction so maybe try a book on something he is interested in-sport/music biography.

TuttiFrutti · 06/08/2020 18:57

Thanks everyone! Even more recommendations. I am going to order some from the library, now that they are open again.
