lol - its like a guilty secret -- not really liking films. i always feel so dumb when everyone has always seens stuff, and i never get the references. according to dh, i have seen quite a few - but never ever remember

HATE the cinema most of all. so uncomfortable. always just want it to end. vowed a year ago never to go again....

Homecoming is the best book for older kids

slowreader · 12/10/2007 18:16

In This House of Brede! Effie. I have never met any one else who has read it.
Have you read R Godden The River? It is perfect.

EffiePerine · 12/10/2007 18:19

Haven't read the River, but loved Kingfishers catch fire (and Black Narcissus of course). Her kids books (Little Plum?) are pretty good too

tyaca · 12/10/2007 19:49

midnightexpressmwahaha · 13/10/2007 20:18

Hardly ever re-read, but am currently re-reading Huckleberry Finn because it's such a beautiful book.

MaryAnnSingletomb · 16/10/2007 14:41

How are people getting on with Tales of the City ???

lucylala · 21/10/2007 09:06

I've just read Tales of the City for the first time and....wasn't that keen.

Well, I mean, it was a good book and I enjoyed it but can't understand why everyone on here is raving about it, think maybe i'm missing something...

However, after reading this thread I just got Behind The Scenes at the Museum out of library again for 3rd time and am lovin it!

MaryAnnSingletomb · 21/10/2007 12:05

that's a shame lucylala - I absolutely love the books but I can see that they might not neccessarily appeal to all - I'm a bit hesistant to do one for m y book group partly for that reason - did you find it dated ? I think they are of their time which might not go down well with people.
I liked the Kate Atkinson v much.

Avadawnsmum · 21/10/2007 23:43

The Life of Pi- Is always a fave of mine, along with The Time Travellers Wife, Shadows Of The Wind, any Harry Potter & Steven King's Rose Madder, Needful Thing and The Dark Tower series

Niecie · 22/10/2007 00:41

Noticed Clumsymum mentioned R F Delderfield. I used to love his books.

My all time favourite re-reads are by Susan Howatch, particularly the Starbridge novels although the others are great. I love sagas that cover the twists and turns of a life time.

I plan to re-read Harry Potter as I read them so spaced out first time around that I can't remember the details from one book to the next. DS1 is reading them at the moment and has whetted my appetite.

There are probably loads I would like to re-read but a lot of our novels have been boxed up since we moved 3.5 years ago, awaiting a new bookcase to put them in.

tyaca · 22/10/2007 19:35

Niecie - i forgot the starbridge novels! good call

OP posts:
Niecie · 22/10/2007 23:54

tyaca - they are good aren't they. I don't usually re-read books - there are too many books in the world that I haven't read once let alone re-read, but I really enjoyed reading these again back to back and pulling all the threads together.

bonitaMia · 25/10/2007 20:31

"1984", "Ubik", "One hundred years of solitude", Luis Landero "Juegos de la edad tardía" (don't know whether this has been translated to english) Sábato's "The tunnel", "Jane Eyre" and Poe's short stories.
Since motherhood I don't have so much time to read, though, so I concentrate on reading something new rather than re-read (apart from "Mr. Bump" and "Mr. Tickle's tickling record", of course, to my special audience... )

Fireflytoo · 08/11/2007 18:51

everything on my bookshelf if i don't have anything new...otherwise the DUNE books and all my 15 year old dd's books (fantasy mostly) and the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes
