What to read after 'Hamnet'?

I have just finished 'Hamnet' and loved everything about it. Any suggestions for something similar?

I also greatly enjoyed 'Where the crawdads sing'. I think after reading too many £0.99 thrillers on Kindle, I loved the lyricism, descriptions of nature and strong sense of place as well as unusual female characters being central in both books. I would like something thought-provoking before I end up with more run of the mill thrillers - I just can't resist a bargain and I am taken in by the 'best thriller this year' description but usually end up disappointed!

I just finished the Lesser Bohemians and whilst it is very hard at first, it does have a beautiful poetic lilt to it. I posted about it here. It’s a bit marmite though.

Have you read any Madeleine Miller? You can’t go wrong with either Song of Achilles or Circe.

Oh and if you want to try some poetry This is a lovely 99p anthology. It works better on a kindle device rather than the app on your phone, as the layout is altered. www.amazon.co.uk/Set-Me-Fire-Every-Feeling-ebook/dp/B0828F7H4C/ref=pd_ybh_a_8?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&refRID=H80YGCVBR5M3D9121R4Y

I loved both of those Madeleine Miller books!

The Lesser Bohemians sounds like it fits the bill. I'm reading your thread now. Thank you!

Have you read Hagseed by Margaret Atwood? It follows the story of The Tempest, and deals also with the grief following the death of a child.

Hercwasonaroll · 21/06/2020 09:24

Sorry slight derail but do I need to have read Hamlet to enjoy Hamnet?

I'm reading Queenie and enjoying it after Crawdads.

ClattyPat · 21/06/2020 09:37

Yes, I have read Hagseed. She's one of my favourite authors.

No need to know anything about Hamlet or even Shakespeare to enjoy Hamnet!

Have you read Ali Smith's How to be Both?

I really enjoyed all most of the books that you've mentioned here, and this is one that I really liked too.

MilkshakeandFries · 21/06/2020 09:42

Also if you liked the Madeleine Miller's, then Pat Barker's Silence of the Girls is brilliant, tells the same story as Song of Achille's but from a different angle.

LunaNorth · 21/06/2020 09:43

I adored Hamnet too.

I’ve just finished Lanny by Max Porter, and Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo. Both fantastic books.

Saucery · 21/06/2020 09:45

He, by John Connolly is written from the point of view of Stan Laurel. It’s stream of consciousness, reads like you are in the mind of a person and reveals its secrets slowly.

Saucery · 21/06/2020 09:46

Might not sound anything like Hamnet, but when I read the latter it immediately reminded me of He in its style.

ClattyPat · 21/06/2020 10:08

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I have Queenie and Silence of the girls in my TBR pile and Girl, Woman, Other is on my list. I'll have a look at the other suggestions as those titles are all new to me. I love hearing suggestions from other readers.

In the meantime I have just opened Airhead by Emily Maitlis as I'm worried my next fiction book will disappoint!

What about Now We Shall Be Entirely Free by Andrew Miller?

It’s a thriller set in the first half of the eighteenth century - a fab book. Lyricism and strong sense of place are there in spades. In fact several of Andrew Miller’s books are set in the past so if you’ve not read anything by Andrew Miller, I would also recommend Pure.

ClattyPat · 21/06/2020 10:34

I haven't read any Andrew Miller and will have a look at those two titles. I'll have to reign myself in when I go to the bookshop.

Enjoy! There are 3 authors I know of called Andrew Miller (also Andy Miller and AD Miller) so best to search by title!

SoLongFurlough · 21/06/2020 21:24

Thanks for that recommendation Northern
Love a poetry anthology

GnomeoNameo · 26/06/2020 21:19

Would also recommend the Andrew Miller - Pure, Ingenious Pain, Now We Shall Be..... And anything by Jane Harris - The Observations, Gillespie & I, Sugar Money.

And The Hunting Party and The Guest List by Lucy Foley.

Ali Smith's 'seasons' quartet.

ClattyPat · 26/06/2020 21:57

I enjoyed the Lucy Foley books, especially the settings. I'll add Ali Smith to the list, thanks.

I'm currently reading Bel Canto by Ann Patchet & love it. The Dutch House is great too. She is such a wonderful writer.
