Can anyone recommend me a good book about Australia - geography/landscape.

I’ve been searching and all I find are Lonely Planet type stuff or educational textbooks. Neither of which I’m after.

I’m looking for something with loads of nice photos but also information about the different areas of the different states. Probably focusing on the national parks but could be about non national parks as well. Not just photos though. I’m wanting to read about the areas, animals, etc.

Bill Bryson did one, Down Under

The Bryson one is excellent, but not much like the OP seems to want. No pictures and not really about the geography and landscape. Some great stuff on animals that want to kill you though!

Is there a specific state or territory you are most interested in? Snowy mountains, desert, East/West coast, QLD islands, the tropics? Its as large as Europe, so finding 1, single book about the flora and topography of that entire country might be a stretch.

Can you provide more info about what you specifically need?

JacobReesMogadishu · 19/06/2020 22:29

All of it really, I’m interested in the whole country.....it seems so diverse. Outback, the Alps, Murray river, The Kimberleys. Seems such amazing landscapes. The different animals in the different areas.

I’d be open to more than one book I guess.

I’m not planning on visiting so don’t need the nitty gritty of where to stay, where to eat, etc.

I’ll definitely look at Bryson’s book.....I may have read it many years ago but i don’t think it’s what I’m after (though probably still worth a read).

I guess part of the problem is that I know next to nothing about the different areas of Australia and I’d like to learn more.

For some history and information about landscape Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu.

The Bill Bryson book is a good way to get a sense of the different parts of Australia. It’s not big on photos.

The Snowy: a History by Siobhan McHugh, which has been reissued. It’s a history of the Snowy Mountains scheme which gives a strong sense of the environment.

You might try these from National Geographic.

These are fantastic thank you (from someone living in Oz also wanting to educate myself)

Some great recommendations thank you.

Looks like Amazon in the U.K. only have a limited number of the national geographic ones and only second hand but Ive ordered a couple. The landscape photography books aren’t available here at all which is a shame as they look good.

Doubly recommend Dark Emu. My in-laws left a copy with us & it’s brilliant. The Bush by Don Watson is also very good, talking about Australia’s relationship with its outback.

Tim Winton’s novels have really good descriptions of the environment but I find them hard going.

I love DK Eyewitness books. Lovely photos and illustrations.
