Not romance and not the 'everything was shit but we triumphed' type.

I'm feeling a bit down and would like a book to make me believe in the good in the world

I like Rainbow Rowell, Eleanor and park, Fangirl and Carry on. Not usually my sort of book but I picked one up at the NT book shop and loved it. One of the reviews for Eleanor and park summed them up for me " remind you not just what it's like to be young and in love with a girl, but what it's like to be young and in love with a book"
Carry on was my favourite, easy to read but not trashy iykwim.

I don’t know if you want non-fiction, but I’m rereading for the umpteenth time 84 Charing Cross Road (bundled in with its sequel The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street). A joy to read, though it is so touching in places you want to cry.

Boy

Absolutely loved this true life story.

Seven Sister - Lucinda Riley - does have romance in it but a good read

Jilly Cooper or Jackie Collin books - pure fun and escapism (although may not fit your remit)

Horse Boy. - Rupert Isaacson
