Kindle battery draining really quickly

Sorry, I know there is an e-reader subsection, but having just looked, it doesn't seem to get much traffic.

I've had my Kindle for about 5 years. It's the basic touchscreen one that was available at the time, not a Paperwhite.

I don't read on it very often, maybe four or five books a year, but the last couple of books I've read on it, I've noticed that the battery runs out really quickly.

I fully charged my Kindle on Monday until the green light came on to start reading a book. This morning, the battery icon with the exclamation mark was on the screen. That's literally only three days since it was supposedly fully charged, with me reading maybe an hour or two a day.

The other weird thing is that the battery seems to go from 40%ish to showing the battery with exclamation mark icon. There's no gradual depletion of battery, with me knowing at 5-10% that I ought to plug the Kindle in.

Within a few minutes of me starting to charge it this morning, the battery icon had gone and I supposedly had 42%. Which probably can't be the case if the battery had been close to zero only a few minutes earlier.

Sorry for the ramble, but has anyone else had this issue? I'm guessing the battery can't be replaced. It's just a bit frustrating not being able to rely on the Kindle staying charged, especially if I take it out with me.

Is there anything I can do?

I think you will need to get a new one. Try contacting Amazon customer services - they are really helpful with Kindle issues. I have had three free of charge replacements over the years, because they want customers to have the devices so they then purchase the kindle format books. You may find if you explain what's going on, they will send you a replacement.

Oh wow, that's interesting to know @AndNoneForGretchenWieners. It hadn't crossed my mind that Amazon would be prepared to send out free of charge replacements.

I'll contact them and see what they say.

I use my iPad instead now, with the kindle app downloaded.

Yeah my kindle of about the same age started doing the same thing. Amazon offered me the latest model with a massive discount so I snapped their hand off! My new one stays charged for ages and I’m really pleased with it - I think it’s the Fire HD 8 model. I got it for £48 which I was happy with.

Definitely give them a call!

I got a replacement Kindle from Amazon too. they aren't that expensive to buy, so even cheaper to manufacture - they are interested in selling you books, not Kindles.

Who did you contact on Amazon to ask about a new Kindle? Mine is struggling too.

WhatWouldDominicDo · 15/06/2020 18:23

The customer service people in Ireland.

Ah, thanks.

One thing that I did find helped when my kept resetting itself was removing a load of downloaded books from it. Put they do just start to pack up after a few years.
