I haven't read this, but I heard about it by people mentioning it on the 50 books threads a year or so ago.

Man (Vietnamese?) ends up looking after a child (orphaned?) and takes the child to France, probably Paris.

I fancy reading it, but I can't remember the title.

It sounds so familiar, but can't bring it to mind.
It's not by Marguerite Duras, is it?

No Vietnamese characters but a man born in France who moved to America as a child finds himself taking care of his late wife's great nephew - the boy's father is dead and his mother is in prison. The man has been planning a trip to France for a long time and if he is to go he has to take the child with him. They both feel huge differences in expectations and understanding of everything.

Akin by Emma Donoghue is an interesting novel by one of my favourite writers, whose works are often very different from each other.

You know this is really bugging me, because I'm sure I bought this book for my mother!

Binterested · 03/06/2020 07:52

It’s on the tip of my tongue. Mr somebody’s something ?

SkepticalCat · 03/06/2020 08:35

Thanks everybody. I'll look up the ones mentioned, but I think Mr Somebody's Something could be it.

I've a feeling it's a translated book from another language, but might be wrong about that.

I might have to trawl the 50 books threads later to see if I come across it.

I had to look it up in my Amazon account, because it was bugging me.
I had bought it in French, so it was La Petite Fille de Monsieur Linh by Philippe Claudel.
Monsieur Linh and His Child in English.

SkepticalCat · 03/06/2020 08:56

Monsieur Linh and His Child.

That's the one! Thank you @PhilODox. And I think @Binterested almost had it too!

Oh that’s it! I actually searched in my Amazon orders for ‘Mr’ and ‘Mister’ Grin Overinvested Grin

onalongsabbatical · 03/06/2020 09:38

It looks like a wonderful book and it's only two quid on kindle, very well reviewed.
So thanks for bringing it to my attention OP and others - gonna buy it.
Also it's short - soooooo many books to read, short is good these days.

SkepticalCat · 03/06/2020 10:18

@Binterested Grin. I pretty much had the title all along, but couldn't quite bring it to mind.

You're welcome @onalongsabbatical. It does look good, doesn't it.

Any admirers of this book might like to read one I enjoyed a couple of years ago, published by a friend.

The Dragonfly. Cannot recall the author's name but it's a touching story of a man bonding with his estranged child, without language. It's romantic, but the love stories are not the usual male-female pairing off.
