Starting a thread for Forgotten book titles feel free to add your own and see if anyone can find it. I will start. When i was at schook we had to read a book and all i remember from it was:
The main character is a boy with older parents who are a bit strange but he doesnt know why. He ends up going to an open day at camebridge uni with said weird parents. Something happens i think one of the professors recognises him which is weird as he has never been and he sees a photo of himself but doesnt know how as he was never there. Eventually he confronts his parents who tell him the truth. They had a son who was killed either sickness or an accident so after he died they had his dna cloned and out into an embryo so his mother gave birth to him the clone of the original son.

Yes, brilliant thread! I'm dying to be able to solve one....I thought I spotted my chance with Brother of the More Famous Jack but someone got there before me! Grin

Keep them coming for the sake of us book nerds.....

Keeping everything crossed that this might ring a bell with someone!
It’s a children’s book that I would have read in the late 80s. I thought it was called something like SuperKids but google has failed me, so I’m guessing that’s not quite right.
But there were six kids, each of whom was very talented in a different sport and the idea was that they all had to compete against each other in each of their sports to see who was the best all rounder. I think the two girls were called Bonnie and Crystal and I think that one of them got kidnapped. That stopped all the rivalry between them and they all banded together to rescue her.
Anyone? Please???

Mine is a series of detective books usually surrounding a church and a vicar. Eg vicar finds a body in his church, thinks it is a down and out. Based in London, probably set in the 1990s. Female author possibly called Kate or the detective might have been called Kate. I think they may have been televised.

Choccyp1g · 20/06/2020 23:28

A book that the teacher read to us in Junior school.

Two boys fall into a hole in the ground which leads them into a time travelling maze, from which they emerge into dinosaurs, stone age etc.

They keep going in and out until they get far enough into the future where the people know how the maze works and can get them back to their right time.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 21/06/2020 05:31

BestIsWest, could they be the Kate Charles ecclesiastical mysteries.

There was a TV series called Grantchester based on a series of short stories which featured a sleuthing vicar.

I don’t think it’s the series you’re looking for, but DM Greenwood wrote a terrific series of ecclesiastical mysteries featuring an Anglican deacon.

BestIsWest · 21/06/2020 08:58

DancelikeEmmaGoldman yes! Thank you, they are the Kate Charles ecclesiastical mysteries. Oh happy day!

This one is a very long shot, and definitely for older Mumsnetters. DH is in his early sixties but still talks about a book he loved as a very small child, about "Pop the Snow Fairy". That's really all he can remember, but he adored it. I have googled to no avail! Does it ring any bells with anyone?

@myotherusernameisonholiday that’s it! Thank you Smile

Is this one The Time Maze by Reginald Maddock? www.goodreads.com/book/show/13364427-the-time-maze
Choccyp1g · 22/06/2020 11:12

Thank you Panticus that looks like the one.

I have one which has bothered me for ages. I even thought I had a copy, but I can’t find it. Not a recent book, might be from the 80s, set in England.

A woman inherits a house from perhaps her aunt or her godmother. The aunt/godmother was famous for something, I think, perhaps fashion design or art.

The young woman takes possession of the house, which is beautifully described. There is some threat to the house over money - another relative? A developer?

In order to save the house the young woman and friends of the original owner put on some kind of production or exhibition of the aunt’s work.

I had thought the book was called something like Gilly’s House, but I think I have it confused with Mary Stewart’s Thornyhold.

Any clues would be much appreciated.

TattyByeTattyHead · 04/07/2020 16:33

Nobody will be able to get this one but worth a try!

I had this book when I was very young - so I'm going to say it was published between 1971-1974.

It was a large heavy hardback book - A4 type sized - and it was all black, apart from the front cover which was amazing. It was a hologram (I think that's what they're called!) and as you tilted the book, the picture on the front would shift and change. The book contained short stories, kind of like fairy tale maybe or animal tales.

Wish I could find it again! Doubt I will though!

There’s one I remember really enjoying as a young kid. I thought it was called something like The Weather Witch, but the few on Amazon with that title aren’t right. There are kids (maybe boy-girl siblings?) who have to travel to some sort of fantasy world and achieve... something... before they can get back home. But it’s all based around weather; I think at some point there may be a literal storm in a teacup. That’s all so vague, I know!!

pollyhemlock · 04/07/2020 17:17

@AppropriateAdult I assume that it’s not The Weather Witch by Paul Stewart as that would have showed up on your Amazon search ?www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/Weather-Witch-Paul-Stewart/dp/0440865042/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Weather%20witch%20Paul%20stewart&qid=1593879201&sr=8-1&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-what-were-reading-3923024-Forgotten-book-title-and-authors" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/Weather-Witch-Paul-Stewart/dp/0440865042/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Weather+witch+Paul+stewart&qid=1593879201&sr=8-1

AppropriateAdult · 04/07/2020 18:12

@pollyhemlock That might be it! It doesn’t appear in an Amazon search for me, I just tried again in case I had somehow missed it - it doesn’t feature at all unless I put in the author’s full name, which is strange... I’m in Ireland so maybe that’s it? But yes, that looks like the one I’m thinking of, although the edition I had had a different cover. Thank you!

Two i briefly remember ya fictions one is about a girl who thinks she might have been kidnapped at birth and sold to her parents.

Late 70s/early 80s YA novel called - I thought - Pauline or possibly Paula - by an author called Storr or Storey or similar (but not any of the obvious writers of those names).

She's a troubled teenager in 70s London who ends up being taken in by a desperately cool family after befriending their daughter?

Cover was by the same artist as did the 70s Antonia Forests (which is why I picked it up!).

It's been bugging me for 30 odd years.

This is 'Pauline', by Margaret Storey, published 1967. Orphaned Pauline lives with unsympathetic relatives including Uncle Harry, who doesn't understand children. She spends a lot of time with a school friend's more understanding family. Brilliant book.

A book I remember getting from the library when I was about 7, so mid 80s. It was a Christmas story about a train with carols (Inc satb score) spread among the story. I'm sure the train was red and the illustrations were pencil drawings. Don't remember anything about the plot but I know I persuaded my babysitter to read the entire thing in one go, including singing all the verses of all the carols.

lcakethereforeIam · 17/07/2024 23:48

Brilliant idea for a thread.

Could anyone help me with this...one? Very vague memories, I'm not sure if I read it or saw it on Jackanory and it's possibly two different books that I've conflated. Children's fantasy book, I think set in this world, Central Park might be a location. There may have been a golden lion and a silver Griffin i think they could talk and were on the good side. A bloke at the end, possibly a/the villain, got turned to stone because he heard a dog talk!

Could this be one of the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane?

@TheWitchwithNoName

I have one, it was read to us in primary school, early eighties, so for a younger audience. It’s about a new girl at school, think she had red hair. She’s very odd and everyone is convinced she is an alien. I can remember she had a dog with hair like chewing gum and drew a picture with purple trees. Any ideas?
@TheWitchwithNoName I think your alien book might be Creeps by Tim Scoch www.amazon.co.uk/Creeps-Book-1-Tim-Schoch-ebook/dp/B00FI9FI5U/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Tim+schoch&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1592589224&sr=8-1

@pollyhemlock

I’ve only just seen your response - I think that’s the book! About to reread it at 50 and feel 10 again, thank you

pollyhemlock · 01/10/2024 16:48

@TheWitchwithNoName Hope you still enjoy it!

oh wow that rings a bell. was it this? you cant tell from the picture but that is a hologram The wild swans by HCA

AquaLibra · 04/10/2024 00:02

This one has bugged me for years. I read it as a child in the 90s but it was probably dated in the 1970s or possibly earlier, I remember it was an old hardback book missing its dust cover so just had a plain cover. I must have got it in a charity shop. It had Enid Blyton vibes but definitely not one of hers. The premise was this group of kids and their governess/nanny getting shipwrecked and they happened to be close to an island which the nanny’s parents owned. I do remember the island was called Quarra and was off the coast of Scotland. There was a farmhouse etc on the island and they stayed in it whilst waiting for rescue, and had some sort of Famous-Five type adventure there. It was a really obscure book I think, so not holding out much hope, have done a lot of googling looking for it.
