I saw this on Amazon and it sounded quite good. It's by Nicola Cassidy. A historical thriller. Or any recommendations of mystery type books not police ones. Thanks.

Are you interested in historical mysteries @Viviennemary? Any particular period?

Viviennemary · 13/05/2020 20:20

I am quite. I've read some of the Shardlake ones. But wouldn't mind trying a different period. Any recommendations would be welcome. Thanks. Can't seem to get into anything at the moment.

I just Googled it and the premise sounds really good.

These series are on the lighter side of the mystery genre but I have enjoyed them.
I have given you the name of the first book in the series.

Dying in the Wool. by Frances Brody. Female detective in 1930's Yorkshire.

After the Armistice Ball by Catriona McPherson. Male and female aristocratic detectives. Between the wars
The Woman who Spoke to Spirits Alys Clare First in a promised series Victorian England
Maisie Dobbs Jacqueline Winspear. Female detective Between the wars.
Susanna Gregory A Plague on Both Your Houses Male detective. 13th century Cambridge
I do hope you find something soon which holds your attention.

Have a look at Robert Goddard for mysteries OP. In Pale Battalions is a good one to start with. After you've read four or five they do begin to feel similar but they're good all the same.

The Connections by Jane Harris is excellent. A Victorian maidservant who goes to work for her employer and is puzzled by what's happening in the house. She's an amusing and engaging narrator.

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters also recounts mysterious goings-on in an old house told through the eyes of the local doctor.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've read quite a few Robert Goddards and I agree they get a bit samey. Caught in the Light is my favourite so far. Those historical sound interesting. There's quite a few authors there to tempt me. I've ordered the nanny one. Hope it's good.

Yes ! I’ve read it and enjoyed it .

MabelStark · 16/05/2020 17:33

@highlandcoo I think the Jane Harris book is called 'The Observations' and I would also recommend it. 'Gillespie and I' by the same author is wonderful too.

highlandcoo · 17/05/2020 00:42

MabelStark you are absolutely right about The Observations - one of my favourite books so I really should have got the title right Blush

I agree that Gillespie and I is also well worth a read.

Yes I read it last month. A solid 7/10 for me.
