Has anyone read this? I'm part way through and loving it.
I want to finish it but don't want it to end. No spoilers please

Yes finished it last week it’s brilliant!

EricaNernie · 19/04/2020 13:54

AvoidingRealHumans · 19/04/2020 13:55

Oh great, I can't wait to see how it pans out.

Fossilette · 19/04/2020 13:57

I ended up limiting my pages so that I could make it last longer. Loved it!!

AvoidingRealHumans · 19/04/2020 13:59

Fosilette that is exactly what I'm doing! Its brilliant, I got it from a friend and it isn't a book I would pick up to read usually so I'm glad she gave it to me.
I read that they're making it into a film.

I am feeling very sensitive at the moment and the sexualisation of a 15 year old and older men / boys talking about popping her cherry is a bit much to bear. I would like to read a book where women are not sexually exploited or murdered.

Oscarthegrouch47 · 19/04/2020 14:21

It's such a good book! It's one of those that you will remember for a long time. I loved it.

Greenteandchives · 19/04/2020 14:26

I read it after seeing it on here. Tesco had it cheap. I bought Educated, by Tara Westover as well.
It was okay, but I prefer what I am reading now, which is Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng.
MN is great to recommendations. I use the What we’re reading thread on my phone at the library when looking for books.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 19/04/2020 15:08

Gosh, I got it ages ago from my Mum and struggled to finish it.
I thought her descriptions of nature were wonderful - so lyrical.
But, the people? No, didn't do it for me, and I couldn't finish it as I was so frustrated with the writing.

Stygimoloch · 20/04/2020 22:48

I’ve just recently finished it and loved it. It’s a brilliant book, beautifully written.

I adored it. It’s one of Reece Witherspoon’s book club books. She will be making a movie of it. If it’s anything like her adaptations of Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere it should be good. You can follow her book club on Insta. I’ve read a fair few of her recommendations many of which are good, peppered with a few turkeys. The Last Mrs Parish is the most badly written book I’ve ever read. The Giver of Stars was also so not worth the hype. I couldn’t wait for it to end.

Ask Again Yes is superb and Such a Fun Age is too.

CountFosco · 21/04/2020 17:47

Read it a few weeks ago. Loved the descriptions and thought the plotting was excellent. Can't believe how alone she was though, found that really upsetting.

Geekster1963 · 26/05/2020 22:14

I’ve just finished reading it and I can honestly say I haven’t enjoyed a book so much for years, it just drew me in and I loved it, especially how it ‘looked’.

Notverygrownup · 26/05/2020 22:24

I really enjoyed it too - just finished it in 3 sittings. If you enjoyed this, you may like Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver too.

ChateauM. keep going. The book delivers what you want . . .

MaMaLa321 · 29/05/2020 08:16

I really didn't enjoy it. Leaving out the nature writing, which was good, if that's your thing.
As soon as Kya matured into a beautiful free spirit (as they always do, in this kind of book), my interest went down to zero. Yeh, like you'd grow up in that environment and turn into a dazzling beauty, with great teeth (no dentistry required if you're a magical marsh woman).
And the 'poetry'. It was so terrible I just skipped it.

Fere · 29/05/2020 10:40

I gave up after around 30%, something didn't agree with me in that story.
Most women love it as I saw it on FB book clubs pages.

NorthernGravy · 29/05/2020 12:58

I couldn’t stand the second half.

Geekster1963 · 29/05/2020 15:31

It does seem to be a bit of a marmite book. I like your user name NorthernGravy

NorthernGravy · 29/05/2020 18:08

Thank you @Geekster1963. All Northerners love gravy 😉. And I do like Marmite.

Geekster1963 · 29/05/2020 22:58

They do! I’m a Northerner and love gravy.

rainbowruthie · 29/05/2020 23:02

Loved this book

dementedma · 20/06/2020 22:04

Loved it. Read it in one sitting. It had echoes of “the Mermaid’s Chair” by Sue Monk Kidd in terms of the setting - the marshes and the egrets etc. really enjoyed it

Panticus · 21/06/2020 12:14

I absolutely hated it - I thought it was garbage and ended up skimming to get to the end. I cannot understand why it is so well regarded - it rates its socks off on Goodreads. The characters were shallow and the whole plot so cliched - I'm getting angry just thinking about it! I'm yet to find anyone in real life who agrees with me. Where are my people?!

I’m not a fan either (see my comments further up). Mind you I didn’t like Eleaner Oliphant and seem to be the only person I know in real life who didn’t enjoy it.
Weekday28 · 22/06/2020 20:37

I bought this book due to the rave reviews but I'm really struggling to get in to it. Is it worth persevering with if im not getting on with it? Or is it likely its just not for me?
