Lesbian fiction

Does anybody have any suggestions for any well written lesbian fiction? I've tried a few recently and found them incredibly badly written and cringeworthy. I'm desperate for a light distracting read so would really appreciate your suggestions. Thank you 😊

Do you like mysteries? A couple of older series I’ve really enjoyed are Lindy Cameron’s Kit O’Malley books and Lauren Wright Douglas. Lauren Wright Douglas’s books are terrific, but out-of-print, sadly. You should be able to get them secondhand.

Before she started writing her big novels, Val McDermid write a series of PI books featuring Lindsay Gordon, which I actually prefer.

I'm not sure Sarah Waters' books are a light read but they're very good.

You could look at Tipping the Velvet, Fingersmith and The Night Watch. I enjoyed Fingersmith most.

In crime I enjoyed The Blue Place by Nicola Griffith, which a PP recommended on here.

If you like romance, The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics is a lovely read, definitely not cringeworthy. Also some of Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate steampunk books are f/f (Romancing the Inventor is very charming)

Seconding Sarah Waters. Her novels are really good.

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo. Also v good.

Another recommendation for Sarah Waters. Everything I've read of hers has been brilliant.

Thanks for these I'm putting a list together now. I've read some Sarah Waters but not in ages so I might have another go.... they are good!

Patricia Highsmith’s Carol ; Emma Donoghue’s early novels all centred on lesbian themes and these resurface in some of her later works; Carol Anshaw a bit more populist but a decent, entertaining writer; Isabel Miller’s Patience and Sarah absorbing, gentle classic lesbian fiction; a number of Jeanette Winterson’s novels centre on lesbian relationships/culture; recently republished Sarah Schulman novels, but one I reread seemed a little dated; Chelsea Girls by Eileen Myles: Zami: a new spelling of my name by Audre Lorde, really excellent, semi-autobiographical account of growing up as a lesbian, African-American; might have a look at this list too

Fingersmith and Sexing the Cherry, (short stories), Oranges are not the Only Fruit.

I've just discovered a writer called Harmen Kalman - lesbian themed short stories and novellas, which are free on Kindle Unlimited.

I also second the recommendation for Sarah Waters. Genius!

I read a book called The Mixed Martial Artist by Lanta Brown which is lesbian fiction and an unusual but very engaging story. It's on kindle unlimited.
Also Pages for Her by Sylvia Brownrigg was brilliant
