I'd love to hear of any recommendations of books reads by their authors

I'm currently listening to the new Marian Keyes book, which she is reading herself. Wasn't sure at first but she's relaxed into it now I'm about half way through.

Neil Gaiman has a lovely voice and has narrated a few of his own books.

I’m listening to the new Marian Keyes book too and can’t say I’m enjoying it. Wish it was someone else reading it. I find her voice annoying. Being an author doesn’t necessarily mean you are able to effectively narrate a book and retain the listener’s attention.

I thought Marian Keyes did a pretty good job of reading her own book. However, I'm struggling to listen to Mudlarking by Lara Maiklem. She's reading her own book and her voice is so flat and lacking expression. It's making it hard to pick up and listen to.

Mine are all non-fiction
I'm thoroughly enjoying Happier at Home by Gretchen Rubin, read by the author, just perfect for right now. (I'd definitely only suggest this if you're fortunate to have a satisfactory to good home life to start with though - it's about her appreciating and making the most of her happy marriage and young children!)
David Attenborough reading his autobiography is just wonderful (sorry, don't recall the title)
If you enjoy popular science / maths What We Cannot Know written & read by Marcus du Sautoy is fascinating, plus he has a wonderful voice

More non-fiction
Damien le Bas reading his book The Stopping Places about exploring his heritage as a Gypsy and his family's traditional stopping places
Darren McGarvie's book Poverty Safari - blend of autobiography and politics
Oliver Burkeman's book about happiness The Antidote

I like autobiographies and travel books read by the author, hearing about their life/experiences in their own voice adds to it. I liked Fingers In The Sparkle Jar by Chris Packham, and Sue Perkins’ books Spectacles and East of Croydon. Also Bill Bryson - he’s narrated some of his own books.

seekingwaxwings · 19/04/2020 15:18

I love to listen to Bill Bryson reading his own books, it's so soothing.

Donna Tartt reading The Secret History though! She sounds thoroughly fed up and bored the whole way through, with sighs an' all. I enjoyed the story but I don't think I'd listen to another she narrated.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things, written and narrated by Patrick Rothfuss, is brilliant. But probably makes more sense if you’ve read/ listened to his other books.

pangolina · 24/04/2020 12:25

I thought Donna Tartt's narration of The Secret History was brilliant! I've listened to it about 4 times.
Lionel Shriver has narrated We Need to Talk about Kevin, which I also intend to listen to.

Came on to also say neil gaiman. Great voice. Great books

eddiemairswife · 24/04/2020 12:33

Alan Bennett.

lockeddownlockedout · 24/04/2020 12:39

Michelle Obama reading Becoming. Loved it!

Vitaceae · 24/04/2020 13:23

Alan Bennett reading anything is just lovely. I have happy memories of listening to his recording of The Wind in the Willows when I was a child. And have enjoyed listening to him reading his own work.

Agree Neil Gaiman is really good at narrating his own books.

aplo · 24/04/2020 13:26

Graham norton reading his two novels. His inflections and tone make them better than reading the books.

Magicbabywaves · 24/04/2020 13:43

I’m listening to Inheritance by Jenny Eclair, I really like her generally (and her books), but it did take a bit of getting used to.
