Need a new genre

Just what it says.
Read loads of detective books, loads of thrillers and getting bored now. Need a new genre. I like straightforward reading. I have read game of thrones but hate Lord of the rings.
Like some classics but hate the Brontes
Like some historical fiction like Laura Purcell.

Don't like stuff like Elinor Oliphant and other light fiction.

Don't want anything too sad.

Just looking at this list I can see how fussy I am!!

Anyone recommend a book which they wish they had never read and feel envious when people have not read it as you wish you could start it again!

Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey

Kate Atkinson.

If you like crime and thrillers but are a bit bored with them, try her Jackson Brodie books. He's a detective but they're more literary crime (that sounds a bit pretentious but I don't know how else to describe them). They're really well written and the characters are very rounded and believable. I've just finished Blue Sky and there was a huge contrast between that and the best selling but pretty crappy thriller that was my previous read.

Also second Elizabeth is missing. I've lent that to a few people and they all loved it.

If you've enjoyed some historical fiction, try Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. That builds a world very vividly and had a twist that seems obvious on rereads but shocked me the first time that I read it. I'd like to be able to completely forget it and read it for the "first" time again.

The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch is great. Part police drama, part magic - very enjoyable. Also if you have audible Kobna Holdbrook Smith is the perfect narrator for this character.

Will try them all and thank you!

If you like straightforward reading OP I would recommend George Orwell and John Steinbeck. They write with great clarity and tackle important issues.

Try 1984 if you've never read it and The Grapes of Wrath

Alternatively you could look at Small Island by Andrea Levy, which describes the life experienced by Jamaican immigrants to the UK after WWII. Very thought-provoking.

I also read lots of thriller/crime. Have you read Bill Bryson travel writing?
I know these are crime but are very well written, so always worth recommending - P D James and Barbara Vine

Also George Orwell as PP recommended.
Daphne du Maurier
Barbara Pym

If you like Laura Purcell you might enjoy Things in Jars by Jessie Kidd , Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield or The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar.
