Hi everyone
After some suggestions for audio books please? I have never listened to one before, I always for a book in hand but I fancy a change. I don’t like anything dark. I’m interested in anything factual, about science, psychology, mindfulness etc. Novels I also enjoy the fantasy genre or perhaps romantic as well!
Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Atomic habits is a good read.

Chimp paradox.

I enjoyed Middlesex by Eugenides. It's a novel about an intersex person but written realistically. It goes on for over 20 hours but I found it fascinating. Lots of history(largely unrelated to gender stuff) in it.

If you haven't read the Rivers Of London or Chronicles of St Mary's series (or possibly even if you have), their narrators are flipping amazing.

In non fiction, Becoming, written and narrated by Michelle Obama, or Becoming by Tara Westover?

Currently listening to very very dreadful by Albert Marrin. Might not be a good time to listen to it depending how you are feeling. It's about previous influenza pandemic

I've just enjoyed Matthew Walker's 'Why we sleep' and Dean Burnett's 'The Idiot Brain'.

There's another current thread about Bill Bryson. I have found some of his are perfect for audio books. The 'factual' ones rather than travel. So far, I've listened to The Body and A Short History of Nearly Everything and have Home still to listen to. I find non-fiction easier to follow on audio books generally as I find I'm more likely to zone out when listening than reading. It somehow seems less important to have missed a few facts than to have missed key plot developments. Maybe I should just concentrate more Smile

Ready Player One! It's absolutely fantastic on audiobook. It's read by Wil Wheaton, and he does a brilliant job. I must have listened to it 30 times

I've listened to lots of audio books over the past couple of years. My absolute favourite is the Martian read by RC Bray.

@MillicentMargaretAmanda. I read a recommendation elsewhere for Rivers of London that was very positive. I don't know London that well, would I still "get" the book?

(Spent two years overlooking the Thames from a Battersea bedsit!)

Novels wise I have really enjoyed a few series from Bella Forrest

The Gender Game
The Girl Who Dared To Think
The Child Thief
Harley Merlin

All are fantasy/dystopian and have an aspect of romance.

goldenorbspider · 01/04/2020 15:52

What did you think to the child thief? Is it the one by brom you listened to? Loved the retelling. Gender games is on my list

IamEarthymama · 01/04/2020 16:26

Ben Aaronavitch's Rivers of London series are superbly narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, my favourite Audible books
Robert Galbraith's Cormoran Strike series

TheCanterburyWhales · 01/04/2020 16:51

I'm not going to suggest anything in particular because it's too subjective, but generally I find my mind wanders more with an audio book so I tend to go for "easy" reads (currently listening to HP Goblet of Fire for example!) or non fiction. Otherwise I feel I'm not listening carefully enough.

I've also downloaded Bill Bryson and Stuart Maconie who I find very similar to BB. I enjoyed Bookworm (history of childhood reading) by Lucy Mangan.

@goldenorbspider

I really enjoyed The Child Thief (Bella Forrest, narrated by Rebecca Soler) although I remember it taking a little bit to get into he story, although that could of been because I listen to series back-to-back so had just finished The Girl Who Dared to Think (which I definitely recommend reading after the Gender Games, it is set in the same world (different part) but in the future)

To be honest, I’m yet to find a series by her that I dislike! But then I enjoy dystopian adventures e.g Hunger Games and Divergent as well as Harry Potter so it is quite unsurprising!

BlueCookieMonster · 01/04/2020 20:07

Twenty four hours in Ancient Rome is brilliant! Well worth a listen.
