Can anyone recommend a really good children's re-telling of the Indian classic legends -- esp the Mahabharata?

?

We've got some good picture book versions but need something for a capable eight year old and his 12 year old brother.

They've both read, eg, Tolkien's Ring trilogy so could cope with something quite 'epic' and involved.

My Mum bought great paperback abridged version of the Ramayana and Mahabharata when we were kids but we were abroad then so I've no idea where she got them from. Have you tried bookshops in Indian areas like West London or Leicester?

I bet Barefoot Books do one - I'll check for you later.

not what you're after i know but related: dp has the little book of hindu deities that he bought for himself but dd (4) really likes it too. it has great pictures. might make a nice quick reference companion to the full texts?

Thanks Cash, seeker, and puppy. No Indian bookshops near me, sadly. Searched for Mahabharata on Barefoot site but no hits (am I misspelling?) That Amazon page, puppy, has a few interesting looking books but need to browse them really to see if suitable. The book you recommend looks lovely (as you say) as a complementary one.

I'm sure thare is something brilliant available somewhere.

Can't access the barefoot website atm - don't know why. Why not give it a try later? www.barefoot-books.com. Lovely stuff on there even if they haven't got what you want!

if you search for a book on amazon.com rather than .co.uk you can often browse them there.
