Inspired by the thread about books set in Devon, I'd like to ask for recommendations for books set in North Wales for a forthcoming holiday.

All I can think of is Alan Garner's Owl Service, so some grown-up books would be good too!

Thanks

Owen sheers’ book resistance. It’s about a group of women in the valleys who hide the mappa mundi during the war and the subsequent events. It’s fab. Sheep shagger by Niall Griffiths although it’s quite violent.

Perhaps try Seren.

I've read The White Tail and White Ravens. Both are set in Wales but I'm not sure where; it's a while since I read them. I enjoyed both books.

If you like Historical fiction - Sharon Penman's Here be Dragons is very good

I live on Anglesey. Where are you staying?

Falderal · 29/02/2020 07:31

I'll be midway between Caernarfon(sp?) & Bangor, so will probably spend a day on Anglesey. Do you have recommendations?

A couple of books in Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series are set around the North West coast of Wales.

Sheepshagger by Niall Griffiths.

AnnaFiveTowns · 29/02/2020 08:53

Actually that's West Wales rather than North Wales.

Part of the Heaven Tree trilogy by Edith Pargeter is set in North Wales and most of the rest is set in the Welsh Marches, in the 1200s.

Here be Dragons Sharron Penman. Wow, it's amazing. About King John's illegetimate daughter and Prince Llewellyn ap Fawr (or should that be Fwarr!)

"The Welsh Girl" by Peter Ho Davies is set in North Wales. Also a lovely book, "George" by Emlyn Williams is his memoir of his childhood in North Wales.

@AhoyMrBeaver - absolutely love that series! First read it at 11 and re read many times since. With the exception of the first one, still makes for a good read as an adult. And yes, full of Celtic myth & the last two set in N Wales.

Thanks all - loads to think about there. Why on earth did I not think of the Susan Coopers? Wonderful books.
Tripfiction looks like a great resource too. Off to travel vicariously now!
