I don't think I've EVER read a crime novel so not sure whether they're my cup of tea, but there's a £3 sale of 'crime listens' on Audible today so thought it was a good time to read my first.

So please, those of you that enjoy crime novels, what would be a good first one to try?

I really enjoyed His Bloody Project.

I'm reading The Paying Guests now which features a crime, I'm enjoying it a lot.

EwwSprouts · 25/02/2020 18:33

Dana Stabenow has a series set in Alaska featuring a female detective. Easy reading and interesting for the culture.

hidingmystatus · 26/02/2020 14:21

Adding Kelley Armstrong's Rockton series and Nadia Stafford series.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 29/02/2020 22:59

Cara Hunter is excellent, and often on Kindle 99p offers.

Reginald Hill (Dalziel and Pascoe from the old TV series, series was great but the books are much better)

Mark Edwards (some of them, and be careful as there are two Mark Edwards- one is utter laughable dross)

Mo Hayder- some are very good, some are gratuitously violent IMO

Anne Cleeves - the Shetland series is great

William Shaw is a crime writer about to hit the best seller lists. Have just finished the newest (to paperback) Deadlands, which I enjoyed.

Other recommendations that are a bit off the beaten track, or older and unjustly overlooked...

Abir Mukherjee has a series set in the Indian Raj.
Peter May
Raymond Chandler (old but gold, and a brilliant genre-defining stylist)
Sara Paretsky's VI Chicago series
Elmore Leonard
George V Higgins
Michael Connelly
Dick Francis (but not those written with his son)
