Wow! I've just finished reading this book and it blew me away.

I feel bereft! I feel like I've lost a friend.

To me it was outstanding, heartbreaking and uplifting.

Any thoughts anyone?

Yes, I read it a few years ago. For the last few chapters I could hardly read as I was sobbing so much. A heartbreaking book.

My only criticism is that all 4 main friends achieve incredible success in their respective fields which is a bit improbable.

I loved this book. So well written. I was bereft when I finished too. If only everyone who had suffered such trauma had such good friends around them. Sadly, as with the comment above about the jobs, I also found the ability of the protagonist’s friends to drop everything for him time and time again both lovely and unbelievable.

I read it a few years ago.

But can’t say I was blown away it felt at times I was guessing what’s going to happen next that will make his life even worse because you knew that was going to happen

But it did make me feel quite low I was glad when the book ended (I wasn’t surprised at the ending)

I loved it too, but agree about the unrealistic portrayal of their careers etc.

I had to stop reading for a bit (spoiler alert!)...

with the very intense description of Judes assault by the nasty boyfriend. Very hard to read, as were lots of other parts obviously.

BaconAndAvocado · 28/01/2020 21:32

MrsPMT it really was incredibly hard to read in places.

I'm reading another book now and whilst it's a good read, it's nothing as outstanding as A Little Life.

I still miss it!

I cried for pretty much an entire day reading the latter part of this. I found I couldn't read anything else for weeks afterwards, it really stayed with me.

Hi, so funny, I'm currently finishing it on my 5th reading Grin I think it is an immensely important novel. In between this current reading and the last one I lost a friend to suicide and the passage where he talks about how frightened Willem must have been at his end had me sobbing uncontrollably.

I absolutely loved this book and it is the only book that has actually made me properly cry. It was a long slog as so thick. I work full time but every spare minute I had I would read it but it isn't the type of book you can just pick him up and read 10 mins then get on with your day. I was really bad and went sick to read the last 80 pages in one hit. So glad I did as I properly sobbed - think the characters will stay with me for ever!!!!
