Hello

Feeling a bit down in the dumps, can anyone recommend any books that are very funny?

Can be fiction or non fiction.

I'm finding my current read about everyday life in dickens London very interesting but rather gloomy, I shall revisit once the January blues blow over.

Thanks in advance Smile

Peter Moore, The wrong way round.
It's a travel book and hilarious.
I reccomend all of his books.

TheSandman · 14/01/2020 22:14

I'm currently reading Catch 22 by Joseph Heller and it is laugh out loud funny. And I don't often do that.

MildDrPepperAddiction · 14/01/2020 22:16

@TheSandman I tried catch 22 and just couldn't get in to it. I was really disappointed. Maybe it was my frame of mind at the time.....must try it again soon.

Jeeves and Wooster books by PG Wodehouse

confusedandemployed · 14/01/2020 22:17

Older Tom Sharpe? I laughed out loud at the Wilt series.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 14/01/2020 22:17

Bill Bryson.

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 14/01/2020 22:19

Things My Girlfriend And I Have Argued About by Mil Millington. Not high-brow, but hilarious.

Chickenpie9 · 14/01/2020 22:20

The Tent the Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy it’s about one woman’s family holidays during her childhood and is proper laugh out loud . Gerald Durrell My Family and Other Animals is also funny .

DownWentTheFlag · 14/01/2020 22:21

Bill Bryson, especially Notes From A Small Island

RickOShay · 14/01/2020 22:24

Sue Townsend any of the Adrian Mole books. They have stood the test of time.

12345FishAlive · 14/01/2020 22:38

Not at all high brow but I couldn't control my laughing during the first part of Snowflakes at the little Christmas tree farm by Jaimie Admans. It's not too far after Xmas to enjoy it, it was a really light and easy read

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 14/01/2020 22:45

Anything by Jonas Jonasson - especially "The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden"

Jasper Fforde - "Shades of Grey" and "Early Risers" are stand alone books. There's the Nursery Crimes series and the Thursday Next series. Thursday Next needs to be read in order starting with "The Eyre Affair".

I also love Dave Barry.

Good Omens

Palavah · 14/01/2020 22:46

The Timewaster Letters - great if you like The Day Today, Alan Partridge etc

Ktay · 14/01/2020 22:48

I loved the Alan Partridge autobiographies; DH less keen

Paperdolly · 14/01/2020 22:49

I’m cheering myself up with This is Going to Hurt...Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor - Adam Kay.

Don’t read it if you plan on having any more children though !

BodenGate · 14/01/2020 22:54

I second Adam Kay - both books!

tinselvestsparklepants · 14/01/2020 22:56

A satire rather than a straight comedy but Perfidious Albion by Sam Byers (?) is absolutely excellent state of the nation biting satire.

TooManyGlasses · 14/01/2020 22:56

Definitely bill Bryson

mistletoeandmerlot · 14/01/2020 22:57

Adam Kay - This is Going to Hurt.

palomapear · 14/01/2020 22:58

Shit My Dad Said

ironicname · 14/01/2020 22:58

Stella Gibbon Cold Comfort Farm morning

AwdBovril · 14/01/2020 23:00

I've said it before: Three Men In A Boat.

I will also second the Adrian Mole books, & Jeeves & Wooster.

Pinkfizzy · 14/01/2020 23:03

If you fancy laugh out loud mysteries, early Janet Evanovich - Stephanie Plum series - had me giggling uncontrollably on the tube!

Sewingbea · 14/01/2020 23:03

"The Elfish Gene" but only if you or DP are a bit of a nerd.
I loathed Adam Kay, I thought he was misogynistic and patronising. Damn glad he was nowhere near when I gave birth.
