What book couldn't you put down? Non high brow!

Any suggestions for something gripping but not all high brow or literary? I know there's another thread sharing unputdownable books but I honestly don't feel tempted by Lincoln in the bardo or the Iliad ...

Black Water by Louise Doughty. She also wrote Apple Tree Yard but I thought this was much better!

Thankssomuch · 12/01/2020 17:53

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (can’t remember the author) - really good.

Pumpkintopf · 12/01/2020 17:54

The Girlfriend by Michelle Frances. Maybe because I'm the mother of a son but I found it absolutely terrifying.

Pumpkintopf · 12/01/2020 17:55

Btw I have also read Lincoln in the Bardo and it's a lovely read, not at all highbrow. The Iliad on the other hand..!

Anything by Stuart McBride. I love a good detective story. I listened to the whole series on audible. The Narrator was brilliant.

wishing4sun · 12/01/2020 18:03

I'm reading the dark materials (Philip Pullman) series am on the second one really enjoying them as much as I liked the tv series.

Another vote for Stuart McBride

Fieldings15 · 12/01/2020 18:25

As per @wishing4sun his dark materials are a great read. Also the new series (the book of dust) although only the first two are published!

The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. Gothic horror & very creepy.

DollyDaydreamss · 12/01/2020 18:29

Looking at Stuart Mcbride and the Louise Doughty one - I read Apple Tree Yard and enjoyed it but this seems completely different

I've recently read Blood Orange and The Hunting Party and enjoyed both

Thanks for the suggestions so far

The liars chair by Rebecca Whitney is very good.

WoodliceInSunderland · 12/01/2020 18:30

I love Sophie Hannah's novels. Not great works of literature but gripping psychological thrillers that you can't stop thinking about.

jollyhollyday · 12/01/2020 18:30

The Whisper Man by Alex North

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 12/01/2020 18:37

Anything by Susan Howatch. But the Starbridge novels in particular.

mamaduckbone · 12/01/2020 18:48

The Kate Atkinson Jackson Brodie novels - Case Histories is the first one I think.

Loveislandaddict · 12/01/2020 18:52

Maeve Binchley books

Jilly Cooper or Jackie Collins - for very non high brow

Yadaaday · 12/01/2020 18:54

Liltzero · 12/01/2020 19:01
